Find out what you need to know before hiring an excavator for your project.

If you're managing a construction project in Brisbane and weighing up whether to buy or hire an excavator, you're not alone. With Queensland's construction sector running at a relentless pace through 2026, more site managers and civil contractors are choosing excavator hire over ownership - and for good reason. Here's what you actually need to know before you pick up the phone.

## Why Hire Instead of Buy?
Owning heavy machinery ties up capital, demands ongoing maintenance, and leaves you exposed when a machine breaks down mid-project. Excavator hire Brisbane services solve all three problems in one move.

When you hire through a provider like Flexihire, you're not just renting a machine - you're accessing a fully serviced fleet that's maintained to commercial standards, backed by flexible rental terms, and delivered directly to your site. For contractors juggling multiple jobs across South East Queensland, that flexibility matters more than ever. You can scale up for a big civil job, then scale back down without a depreciating asset sitting idle in your yard.

## What Size Excavator Do You Actually Need?
This is the question that trips up a lot of first-time hirers. Excavators in the Brisbane market typically fall into a few broad categories:

Mini excavators (1–5 tonnes): Ideal for landscaping, residential footings, trenching in tight urban blocks, and pool excavation. These machines are compact enough to navigate suburban Brisbane properties with narrow side access.
Mid-size excavators (6–13 tonnes): The workhorse category for most civil and commercial jobs - driveway works, stormwater installation, site clearing, and general earthmoving.
Large excavators (14 tonnes and up): Used for major civil infrastructure, bulk earthworks, demolition, and large-scale subdivision work.
Getting the size wrong is one of the costliest mistakes on a job site. Too small, and you'll blow out your timeline. Too large, and you're paying for capacity you don't need - plus potentially damaging ground conditions or struggling with site access. A good hire partner will ask about your site conditions, access constraints, and the specific task before recommending equipment, rather than just upselling the biggest machine on the lot.

## Attachments Matter as Much as the Machine
An excavator without the right attachment is just an expensive paperweight. Before you lock in a hire, think through what attachments you'll need:

Buckets (trenching, mud, rock) for different soil and material types
Hydraulic breakers for demolition or rock breaking
Augers for post holes and foundation work
Rippers and grapples for site clearing and vegetation management
Reputable excavator hire Brisbane providers will supply attachments alongside the machine, and ideally let you swap between hires if your project scope shifts. This is where Flexihire's flexible terms really pay off - projects rarely go exactly to plan, and being locked into a rigid contract when your needs change mid-job is a real headache.

## Wet Hire vs Dry Hire: Which One Do You Need?
In Queensland, you'll come across two main hire arrangements:

Dry hire means you're renting the machine only - you supply your own qualified operator. This suits contractors with in-house operators and tickets already sorted.

Wet hire includes a qualified, experienced operator alongside the machine. This is popular with site managers who need the job done without managing additional labour, or who are short-staffed on a given week.

Think about your current crew capacity and licensing before deciding. If none of your team holds the appropriate excavator operation tickets, wet hire removes that bottleneck entirely and keeps your project moving.

## What Does Excavator Hire Cost in Brisbane?
Pricing varies based on machine size, hire duration, attachments required, and whether you need an operator. Daily rates for mini excavators tend to sit at the more affordable end, while larger machines and wet hire arrangements command higher rates due to included labour and fuel considerations.

A few cost factors worth asking about upfront:

Minimum hire periods - daily, weekly, or monthly rates can differ significantly in value
Delivery and pickup fees - especially relevant if your site is outside the Brisbane metro area
Damage waivers or insurance - protect yourself from unexpected liability
Flexihire's flexible short and long-term rental terms mean you're not forced into an oversized commitment for a job that might only run two days, nor penalised with daily rates if your project stretches into weeks. Transparent, upfront pricing should be non-negotiable - if a provider can't give you a clear quote before delivery, that's a red flag.

Delivery Speed Is a Bigger Deal Than People Realise
Construction delays are expensive. Every day an excavator isn't on site is a day your crew is standing around or your schedule slips. This is exactly why rapid on-site delivery across Brisbane and greater Queensland is one of the most underrated factors in choosing a hire provider.

Ask potential suppliers directly: how quickly can they get a machine to your site? Same-day or next-day delivery can be the difference between hitting a deadline and explaining a blowout to your client. Flexihire's logistics network across Brisbane and QLD is built specifically around minimising that downtime, getting serviced machinery to site fast whether you're working in the CBD, outer suburbs, or regional QLD.

## Checking Compliance and Machine Condition
Before any excavator arrives on site, confirm:

- The machine has current servicing and safety inspection records
- The hire company carries adequate insurance coverage
- Site-specific safety requirements (like underground services checks) have been addressed
- Fully serviced fleets reduce breakdown risk significantly, but it's still worth asking your hire provider about their maintenance schedule. A machine that's regularly serviced performs more reliably and safely - which protects your timeline and your crew.

## Making the Right Call for Your Project
Excavator hire Brisbane decisions come down to matching the right machine, the right hire arrangement, and the right provider to your specific job. Rushing this process to save time upfront often costs more later through delays, wrong-sized equipment, or unreliable machinery.

Take the time to assess your site access, soil conditions, attachment needs, and crew licensing before you call around for quotes. A hire partner that asks good questions back - rather than just pushing availability - is usually the one that'll save you headaches down the track.

## What should I know before hiring an excavator in Brisbane?

Before hiring an excavator in Brisbane, assess your site access, soil conditions, and job scope to choose the right machine size and attachments, and decide between wet hire (with operator) or dry hire based on your crew's licensing. Flexihire offers fully serviced excavator fleets with flexible short and long-term rental terms and rapid on-site delivery across Brisbane and QLD, helping contractors avoid costly delays from the wrong equipment or slow logistics.

Excavator Hire Brisbane: What You Need to Know

Find out how VMS boards help manage traffic at roadworks and events, the types available and what they cost to hire.

A lane closure on a busy arterial road, a multi-day civil project, and a major outdoor event all share the same requirement: getting information to drivers and the public quickly as conditions change. A sign board that displays one fixed message indefinitely isn't suited to a site where conditions shift by the hour, which is where VMS board hire fits in.

Flexihire supplies traffic management equipment to civil contractors, councils and event organisers across Queensland and Northern NSW. This guide covers what a VMS board is, the range available for hire, how it's used across traffic management and events, and what to check before booking.

## What a VMS Board Is

VMS stands for Variable Message Sign. A VMS board is a trailer-mounted electronic sign fitted with an LED display that can be reprogrammed with new text, arrows or symbols at any time, unlike a static sign board, which displays a single fixed message for the duration of its install.

Most units are solar powered with a battery backup, allowing continuous operation without mains power. Messages are typically updated through a keypad, remote connection or app, which means a site supervisor can change a message without attending the sign in person or halting work.

## VMS Board Range Available for Hire

Flexihire's VMS board range covers a few configurations, depending on the level of visibility and detail a project requires. The large amber LED message board is the standard choice for most roadworks and civil traffic management jobs, solar powered, straightforward to tow into position, and delivering the high-contrast visibility drivers expect on the road. For projects or events requiring more detail, such as multi-line messages, directional arrows, or graphics, the full-colour LED board offers greater flexibility while still running on solar power. A solar speed sign displays a vehicle's actual speed back to the driver in real time, which is a straightforward way to slow traffic through a work zone or event precinct without needing an operator on site.

Confirming which sign suits a given job is worth doing with the local branch, since our team can match the right unit to site conditions and the traffic management plan in place.

## How VMS Boards Support Civil Contractors

For civil contractors, a VMS board is often written directly into the Traffic Management Plan for the job rather than treated as an optional extra. Lane closures, detours, and altered speed limits are flagged well before drivers reach the hazard, giving them time to react safely. As a crew progresses along a corridor, the message can be updated within minutes rather than requiring a new sign to be fabricated and installed, which keeps signage aligned with a job that rarely stays static. Most Traffic Management Plans prepared under state road authority guidelines specify where variable message signage is required, particularly on higher-speed roads or multi-stage projects, and clear, timely signage is one of the more straightforward ways to reduce risk on a roadworks site for both crews and the public.

## How VMS Boards Support Event Managers

Outdoor events bring their own traffic and crowd management requirements, and a VMS board serves a purpose well beyond the roadworks context. Vehicle flow, including parking overflow, one-way systems and drop-off zones, can be updated throughout the day as different areas fill or close. Wayfinding signage directing attendees to a specific gate or entry point reduces congestion at entry points, and where vehicles and foot traffic mix, a VMS board provides a clear way to slow vehicles and flag pedestrian crossing points. Weather delays, gate changes or session updates can also be communicated instantly across multiple points on site.

## VMS Board vs Static Sign Board

A common question when planning traffic management is whether a static sign board will do the job, or whether variable messaging is needed. A static sign board displays one fixed message for as long as it's installed, which makes it a cost-effective option for conditions that won't change, a single, well-defined hazard or a permanent detour, for example. A VMS board is built for conditions that will change. If a project moves through multiple stages, if traffic needs to be redirected differently at different times of day, or if an event schedule shifts, a VMS board allows the message to be updated without sending someone back out to swap signage. For most multi-stage civil projects and events, this flexibility makes VMS the more practical choice.

## VMS Board Hire Cost in Queensland and Northern NSW

The cost of [hiring a VMS message board](https://www.flexihire.com.au/traffic-management/vms-message-boards/) depends on the type of board, the length of hire, and location. As a general guide, daily hire starts from around $300, with better rates available for longer hire periods. For a specific quote tailored to a project, contact the local Flexihire branch or request an instant online quote.

## Common Applications: Roadworks, Civil Projects and Events

VMS boards are used across a wide range of project types throughout Brisbane, Queensland and Northern NSW. On road and civil projects, they warn of lane closures, direct detours, display reduced speed limits, and communicate changing conditions as a project moves through its stages. Councils and infrastructure contractors use VMS boards to keep residents and motorists informed during longer-duration works, including staged rollouts across multiple sites. Event organisers use them for parking direction, pedestrian safety messaging, wayfinding, and communicating schedule or gate changes in real time.

VMS Board Hire: How Variable Message Signs Help Manage Traffic and Events

From small tools to heavy machinery, here's a quick look at what you can hire from Flexihire and how easy it is to book.

A stump grinder for a weekend backyard job and a full traffic management setup for a civil project both come from the same catalogue. This guide covers what's actually available, who it's for, and how the booking process works, so it's clearer what to ask for when contacting a branch.

## Who Hires Equipment

The customer base is broader than the word "tradesperson" suggests. DIY homeowners tackling a weekend project use the same branch network as project managers running a multi-month civil job, just for different equipment. A stump grinder for a backyard job sits in the same catalogue as a compactor or generator for a larger build.

This range is why equipment hire works equally well for a one-off job and an ongoing contract. Flexihire's project capability arrangements exist specifically for builders, civil contractors and site managers who need flexible terms rather than a single day's hire, while the same online quote system works just as well for someone booking a mower for the weekend.

This dual audience is reflected in how branches operate. A homeowner booking a single-day hire gets the same instant online quote process as a site manager arranging equipment for a job running several months, without a different system or point of contact depending on job size.

## What's in the Range of Equipment Hire

The catalogue extends well beyond what most people expect from a hire company. Access equipment, earthmoving gear, concreting tools, pumps, generators, traffic management equipment, landscaping machinery, scaffolding, trailers and site equipment cover most construction and trade tasks, which allows one branch to serve a genuinely wide range of jobs rather than specialising in a single trade.

Machinery such as excavators and compactors sits alongside smaller everyday tools including pressure washers, grinders and power tools in the same catalogue. This matters because many jobs need both ends of the range at once, a mini excavator for digging and a compactor for backfill, rather than sourcing them from two different suppliers.

Beyond core trade categories, the range extends to site amenities such as portable toilets, lighting towers for after-hours work, and vehicles and trailers for moving materials, which allows one branch to supply a complete project without a second supplier involved.

## How Booking Works

Smaller, more common equipment can usually be booked with an instant online quote, which is the quickest way to secure equipment for a weekend job or short-term hire. Larger or more specialised machinery, typically booked for bigger projects, is better handled with a call to the local branch, since pricing and availability depend more on the specifics of the job.

Delivery and pickup is available for equipment that isn't practical to collect directly, which matters once hiring anything beyond what fits in a ute tray. Confirming this at the time of booking, rather than assuming it's included, is worthwhile, since availability varies with equipment size and distance from the nearest branch.

Hire terms are flexible across the board, whether that's a single day for a weekend project, a week for a longer renovation, or an ongoing project-term arrangement for a civil job running for months. That flexibility is part of what makes [hiring equipment](https://www.flexihire.com.au/equipment-hire/) more practical than buying for most people, since the equipment only needs to be on hand for the length of the job.

## More Than a Rental Counter

Booking equipment is only part of what a hire company provides. Staff at each branch see a wide range of jobs come through, from a first-time DIYer unsure what size compactor is needed to a site foreman requiring a specific traffic management setup, and that experience is available to draw on rather than simply selecting equipment from a list.

This also extends to documentation many people don't think to ask about until it's required. Safe operating procedures, risk assessments and technical sheets are available for equipment where relevant, which matters on a commercial job where a site safety officer needs more than a machine arriving on time.

## Why the Branch Network Matters

Flexihire has been operating since 1978, starting from a single branch in Rockhampton, and has grown into a network spanning Queensland and Northern NSW while remaining 100% Australian owned. This history is practically relevant, not just a point of note, since a long-established branch network generally means well-maintained equipment and staff familiar with the range of jobs that come through the door.

The branch network extends well beyond Brisbane itself, reaching regional Queensland centres and across the border into Northern NSW, so the same catalogue and booking process is available whether the job is in the CBD or several hours up the coast.

The company is a member of both the Elevated Work Platform Association and the Hire and Rental Industry Association, which is relevant when booking equipment for a commercial project where compliance documentation matters as much as the machine itself.

## Getting the Right Equipment for Your Job

Whether the requirement is plant hire for a civil project or a single piece of equipment for a weekend job at home, Flexihire's full range is available across branches throughout Queensland and Northern NSW. Equipment Hire in Brisbane: The Complete Guide to Flexihire's Full Range

Manlift or scissor lift? We compare both so you can pick the one that suits your space, your team and the work you're doing.

Indoor access work usually comes down to doorways, tight corridors, and a warehouse floor that's already full of stock. Getting someone up safely in that kind of space is harder than it sounds. A manlift and a scissor lift both solve this, just in different ways, and picking the wrong one for the space usually becomes obvious the moment the machine reaches a doorway it can't fit through. Both are common on Brisbane job sites, and understanding the difference before booking avoids that outcome.

## What Separates a Manlift from a Scissor Lift

A manlift, sometimes called a vertical lift or personnel lift, is built around a narrow mast that extends straight up, with a small platform at the top sized for one person and their tools. A scissor lift works on a different principle, using a criss-crossing frame that folds as it lowers and unfolds as it rises, providing a larger platform with room for a second person and materials.

Platform size is the key distinction between the two. A manlift trades platform space for a smaller footprint and lighter weight, which allows it to move through doorways and aisles a scissor lift cannot access. A scissor lift trades that manoeuvrability for a larger, more stable working area, which becomes necessary once the job involves more than a single light fixture.

Power source is another practical difference. Manlifts are almost always electric, keeping them quiet and free of exhaust fumes, both useful in an occupied building. Scissor lifts are available in electric and diesel versions, with diesel and rough-terrain models built for outdoor or unmade ground rather than a finished indoor floor.

## Where a Manlift Is the Better Choice

Single-person jobs in tight spaces call for a manlift. Changing light fittings in an office corridor, servicing equipment in a plant room, or general maintenance in a warehouse aisle between racking are typical manlift jobs. The unit's narrow, light build also makes it one of the easier pieces of access equipment to move between jobs on the same site without a forklift or trailer.

Operating a manlift doesn't require a special licence, which makes it accessible for a facilities team to keep on hand for routine work, rather than requiring a dedicated operator booked in each time.

A manlift's lighter weight also means it can often be moved by hand between rooms without power assistance, whereas a scissor lift, even a small electric model, is heavy enough that moving it any real distance generally means driving it on its own wheels. For a facilities manager working through several maintenance jobs in one visit, that portability often matters more than the additional height a scissor lift provides.

## Where a Scissor Lift Is the Better Choice

Once a job requires more than one person, or tools and materials need to be carried together, a scissor lift becomes the more practical option. The larger platform reduces the number of trips up and down, which adds up quickly on jobs involving ceiling work, signage installation, or servicing larger equipment overhead.

Scissor lifts also scale further in height. Flexihire's electric range runs from smaller doorway-rated units through to 20ft, 26ft and 32ft models, roughly 6m, 8m and 10m working heights, covering everything from a standard warehouse ceiling to a taller shed or loading dock.

Load capacity is higher on the larger platform too, which matters when carrying more than hand tools. A stack of ceiling tiles, a coil of cable, or a small compressor can go up in a single trip, which is precisely the kind of job a manlift's smaller platform isn't designed for.

## Facilities Managers vs Tradespeople: Different Priorities

For a facilities manager working through a list of small maintenance jobs across a building, a manlift's speed of setup and ease of movement between rooms is generally the more practical choice, particularly when most jobs only need one person up for a few minutes at a time.

A tradesperson working a single, longer job, such as fitting out a mezzanine, running cable trays, or installing signage, generally gets more value from a scissor lift's larger platform and higher load capacity, since fewer trips up and down saves meaningful time over a full day.

## Matching the Machine to the Space

Measuring actual doorways and corridors rather than estimating is worthwhile before booking either unit. A doorway-rated scissor lift will pass through a standard door, but a wider unit will not, and this cannot be corrected on the day. Floor loading also matters, particularly in older buildings or upper-level plant rooms, since a [scissor lift](https://www.flexihire.com.au/access-equipment/scissor-lifts/) is heavier than a manlift of similar height.

Ground conditions matter almost as much as height. A polished concrete warehouse floor suits either machine, but uneven ground, gravel, or outdoor conditions favour a scissor lift, since its wider wheelbase and larger tyres handle these conditions better than a manlift's narrower base.

Non-marking tyres are standard on Flexihire's electric scissor lifts, which matters for indoor work where a scuffed showroom floor or freshly polished warehouse slab is not something a site manager wants to deal with afterwards. Confirming this is included, whichever machine is booked, is worth doing on any job where floor finish is a concern.

## Hiring the Right Access Equipment

For [hiring a manlift](https://www.flexihire.com.au/access-equipment/man-lifts/) for routine maintenance in tight indoor spaces, or a scissor lift for a bigger job involving more than one person working at height, Flexihire has both available across our branches throughout Queensland and Northern NSW. Get an instant quote online or talk to your local branch about which machine fits your space. Confirming what the job actually involves at the time of booking helps avoid a wasted trip if the wrong machine is supplied.

Manlift vs Scissor Lift: Which Access Equipment Do You Actually Need?

Mixing concrete for a slab, footings or post holes? Find out which mixer size to hire, how to get the mix right and how to clean up after.

Mixing concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow works fine for a single bag, but the process becomes impractical for anything more. Consistency gets harder to maintain with each additional batch, and physical tiredness starts to affect the quality of the mix. A concrete mixer keeps the mix consistent throughout the job, which is why most people hire one for anything beyond a small task. This guide covers drum sizes, mix ratios, and why a vibrator improves the pour.

## Why Hire a Concrete Mixer

The main advantage of a mixer is consistency. Hand mixing rarely produces an even ratio across the full batch, and this affects the strength and finish of the pour once cured. A mixer is also faster, and reducing the time between mixing and placing matters once the concrete begins to set. Slabs, footings, post holes and paving all benefit from a properly mixed batch rather than a rushed one.

Drum size is the first decision to make before booking. Flexihire's 2 cu ft mixer is suited to post holes, stepping stones and small patch jobs, while the 3 cu ft mixer, available in electric or petrol, covers most home slabs, footings and paving jobs without issue. For larger jobs, such as a shed slab or a substantial driveway, running a 3 cu ft mixer continuously through a big pour extends the job considerably, so it's worth weighing that against batched concrete delivery once volumes climb.

## Getting the Mix Ratio Right

A general-purpose mix runs around one part cement, two parts sand, and three parts aggregate, though this varies depending on the job and the strength required. Footings and structural work require less water and a firmer mix, since excess water weakens the cured concrete and increases the risk of cracking. Measuring the ratio rather than estimating it is worth doing, as an inconsistent mix is one of the most common reasons a DIY pour underperforms.

A plasticiser makes a stiff mix easier to work without adding extra water, which is useful when a mix is difficult to pour without weakening it. Even a correctly mixed batch traps air once poured, particularly around reinforcement or in deeper formwork. A concrete vibrator works through the wet mix to release this trapped air, producing a denser pour with fewer surface blemishes once cured. This step can be skipped on a small, shallow job, but is worth the additional time on any pour involving steel reinforcement.

## Weather and Timing on Pour Day

Hot Queensland conditions accelerate curing time and can cause the surface to dry faster than the concrete underneath, increasing the risk of cracking. Working early in the day, keeping the mix slightly wetter within the correct ratio limits, and covering the pour once placed all help manage this. Rain presents the opposite issue, since a downpour on fresh concrete can wash out the surface finish, so checking the forecast before committing to a pour day is worthwhile.

Curing matters as much as mixing once the concrete is placed. Keeping fresh concrete damp for the first few days, covering it if rain is forecast, and restricting traffic on it longer than seems necessary all contribute to a slab that holds up properly over time.

## Choosing Between On-Site Mixing and Batched Delivery

For volumes under approximately half a cubic metre, it generally makes sense to [hire a concrete mixer](https://www.flexihire.com.au/concreting-equipment/concrete-mixers/) and mix on site rather than arrange a delivery, both on cost and convenience. For larger volumes, particularly a driveway or a larger slab, batched concrete delivery from a local supplier is worth comparing against on-site mixing, since running a small mixer continuously for that volume extends the job considerably.

## Working Safely with a Concrete Mixer

The rotating drum and mixing paddles present a genuine risk if hands or tools are placed inside while the mixer is running, so loading material and adding water should only be done with the drum stopped or set to the correct angle for the unit. The machine should also be positioned on level, stable ground before starting, to prevent it tipping under load.

## Cleaning the Mixer After Use

Concrete left in the drum overnight sets hard, and removing it afterwards is time-consuming. Hosing the drum out immediately after the last batch, while still wet, prevents this. Running a few shovels of gravel and water through the drum for a minute or two helps clear residue from the inside walls before a final rinse.

Concrete Mixer Hire: Everything You Need for Your Next Pour

New to laser levels? We explain the two main types, what jobs they suit and how to set one up properly for accurate results.

A laser level replaces the manual checking a spirit level requires with a single constant reference line, which speeds up and improves the accuracy of framing, fence lining, shelving and foundation work. This guide covers the difference between rotating and line lasers, how they're used for pipe laying, and how to set one up correctly indoors or outdoors.

## What a Laser Level Does

A laser level projects a straight, level line of light across the work area, removing much of the manual checking a spirit level requires. For a DIYer hanging shelves or lining up a fence, or a builder framing a wall or laying foundations, it reduces the margin for human error. Once the unit is set up and levelled, the line remains constant while work continues from as many points as needed.

Laser levels are rated by class, which affects both beam brightness and the eye safety precautions that apply. Most [laser level hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/earthmoving-equipment/levels-measuring-equipment/laser-level/) units are a Class 2 or Class 3R laser, safe for general use but not something to look directly into, so confirming which class is being supplied is worth doing with your branch if the beam is likely to cross paths with other people on site.

## Rotating Lasers vs Line Lasers

A line laser produces one or two fixed lines, horizontal or vertical, which is sufficient for smaller indoor work such as hanging cabinets or squaring up a room. A rotating laser spins its beam a full 360 degrees, which suits outdoor jobs such as setting up decking, grading a yard, or any task requiring the same reference line visible from every direction across a wider space.

A rotating laser also supports multiple people working simultaneously from different points around a site, checking heights with a receiver rather than returning to the unit each time. This makes it the more efficient choice on larger jobs involving more than one person working across a spread-out area.

## Pipe Laying Applications

Getting the fall correct on stormwater or sewer pipe determines whether drainage functions correctly once backfilled. A laser set to the correct grade provides a constant reference line to work the trench against, rather than stopping every metre to check with a spirit level. Most pipe-laying lasers allow a specific grade or fall percentage to be dialled in directly, reducing the guesswork involved in getting it right the first time.

This is also where the distinction between a [laser level](https://www.flexihire.com.au/earthmoving-equipment/levels-measuring-equipment/laser-level/) and a theodolite matters. A theodolite measures precise angles for detailed surveying, boundary setouts and larger site measurements where accuracy over long distances is critical. For everyday trade and DIY work, a laser level covers the requirement, with a theodolite reserved for larger civil or surveying jobs where that additional precision is genuinely needed.

## Setting Up a Laser Level Correctly

Start with a stable tripod on firm ground, since any wobble affects the reading. Most self-levelling units adjust automatically once roughly level, but checking against a physical reference point before relying on the reading is still worthwhile. The most common setup errors are not allowing the tripod time to settle on soft ground, and failing to account for the height of the laser itself when transferring a measurement.

Indoor work is generally more forgiving, with no sun to contend with and typically a stable floor for the tripod. Outdoor setups introduce wind, uneven ground, and glare, all of which reduce accuracy if not accounted for. A laser detector improves visibility in bright sun, since the beam can be difficult to see with the naked eye in full daylight, so outdoor setups generally require more care than the equivalent indoor job.

## Choosing Between Class 2 and Class 3R Units

Class 2 lasers are lower-powered and suit shorter-range indoor work where the beam isn't required to travel far or remain visible over a large area. Class 3R lasers are brighter and more visible over longer distances, making them better suited to outdoor jobs or larger sites, though they require slightly more caution around direct eye exposure. Confirming which class suits the job, rather than defaulting to whichever unit is on hand, avoids paying for more laser than the job requires or under-specifying visibility for a larger site.

## Maintaining Accuracy Over the Hire Period

A laser level that's been dropped or knocked during transport should be recalibrated or checked against a known reference point before being trusted for further work, since even a small impact can shift internal calibration without any visible sign of damage. On longer hires involving multiple setups across different locations, periodically checking the unit against a fixed reference point catches any drift before it affects a measurement that's already been acted on.

## Hiring the Right Laser Levels

Flexihire has line and rotating laser levels available across branches throughout Queensland and Northern NSW, along with detectors and tripods to go with them. Get an instant quote online or talk to your [local branch](https://www.flexihire.com.au/branch/) about what suits the job.

How to Use a Laser Level: A Beginner's Guide to Hiring and Operating One

A simple guide to using a rotary hoe for garden beds and lawns, including which size to hire and how your soil type affects the job.

A rotary hoe is the standard tool for breaking up compacted soil and preparing garden beds or lawns for planting. This guide covers what a rotary hoe does, when to use one instead of an aerator or dethatcher, and how to read soil conditions before starting the job.

## What a Rotary Hoe Does

The rotating tines dig into the ground and turn it over more evenly than manual digging, breaking up clumps and working through compacted soil with minimal effort. It's suited to preparing a new garden bed, turning over a section of lawn before reseeding, or mixing compost and fertiliser through the topsoil rather than leaving it sitting on the surface.

Loosening compacted soil gives plant roots space to establish, which is a common reason new plantings fail to take. Working the hoe through straight after spreading compost or manure ensures the organic matter is properly incorporated into the bed rather than sitting on top, saving a separate step later in the process.

## Preparing a Damaged Lawn for Reseeding

A lawn that's come out of winter patchy or damaged usually needs more than mowing to recover. A [rotary hoe](https://www.flexihire.com.au/landscaping-gardening-equipment/rotary-hoes/) turns over the damaged sections ready for reseeding. If the lawn only needs loosening rather than a full rework, an aerator or dethatcher is likely to give a better result without disturbing the whole yard.

These three tools aren't interchangeable. An aerator improves airflow and drainage on an established lawn without significantly disturbing the surface. A dethatcher clears dead grass and organic build-up that's restricting new growth. A rotary hoe is the heavier-duty option for starting fresh or working through soil that's genuinely compacted, rather than simply tired.

## How to Choose the Right Size Rotary Hoe

Rotary hoes are available in different sizes, and matching the size to the job affects both cost and how long the job takes. A smaller, lighter hoe suits garden beds and confined spaces where manoeuvrability matters more than raw power. A larger hoe covers ground faster on bigger areas such as a full lawn rework or a market garden bed, but is heavier to manoeuvre in tight spaces or around existing plantings. Confirming bed or lawn size with the local branch when booking helps match the right size to the job rather than defaulting to whichever unit is available.

## Reading Soil Type and Timing the Job

Clay soil holds together in dense clumps and typically needs multiple passes to break down properly. Sandy soil comes apart easily but doesn't retain the shape of a worked bed as well afterwards. Loam sits between the two and is generally the easiest to work. Identifying which soil type is present on site helps set realistic expectations for job duration and whether a single pass will be sufficient.

Soil that's been dried out by a Queensland summer is difficult to work regardless of equipment, so timing the job around recent rainfall, or at least reasonably moist ground, makes the job significantly easier. Waterlogged clay clumps around the tines rather than breaking apart cleanly, so working the soil a day or two after light rain is generally the most workable window, soft enough to break down but not so wet that it turns to mud under the machine.

## Working Safely with a Rotary Hoe

The tines operate with significant force, so keeping hands and feet clear while the machine is running is essential. Sturdy, closed footwear should be worn rather than open-toed shoes, and the area should be checked beforehand for buried irrigation lines, tree roots, or embedded debris that could catch the machine unexpectedly. This is particularly important on sloped ground, where maintaining control of the machine is more difficult if it loses traction.

Before starting, confirm the tines are free of debris from any previous use and that the depth setting is appropriate for the job. Running the hoe at too great a depth on the first pass can overload the motor or cause the machine to bog down in heavier soil, so working through in stages on compacted or clay-heavy ground typically gives a better result than attempting a single deep pass.

## Scaling Up for Market Gardens and Larger Areas

The same principles apply at a larger scale for market gardens rather than backyard beds. Turning over multiple beds between plantings maintains soil structure across successive growing seasons rather than allowing it to degrade over time. For anyone working across several beds in a single visit, discussing hire duration with the local branch is worthwhile, since a full-day rate often provides better value than booking several shorter half-day hires.

## Cleaning and Returning the Machine

Cleaning the machine after use matters as much as using it correctly. Soil and root matter left on the tines can affect performance on the next use and, on a hired machine, should be cleared before return. A stiff brush or hose is generally sufficient to clear caked soil from the tines and guard, and this should be done once the machine has cooled if it's petrol powered.

## Choosing Between a Rotary Hoe, Aerator and Dethatcher

Deciding which tool suits the job comes down to the current state of the soil or lawn. If the bed or lawn section is being started from scratch, or the soil is compacted enough that a shovel makes little progress, a rotary hoe is the correct tool. If the lawn is generally healthy but showing signs of poor drainage or thinning grass, an aerator addresses the underlying issue without disturbing the surface. If the lawn has a thick layer of dead grass and organic matter preventing new growth, a dethatcher clears this without the more invasive action of a rotary hoe. Confirming which category the job falls into before booking avoids paying for heavier equipment than the job requires.

Rotary Hoe Hire: How to Prepare Your Garden Beds and Lawn

Planning a lane closure for roadworks? Here's what to know about hiring portable traffic lights, where to place them and staying TMR compliant.

Managing single-lane closures on a roadworks site comes down to two options: staffing the closure with traffic controllers, or installing portable traffic lights to manage the flow automatically. On any job running longer than a day or two, portable traffic lights are typically the more cost-effective choice. This guide covers where they're used, TMR compliance requirements, solar power options, and how they integrate with other traffic management equipment.

## Where Portable Traffic Lights Are Used

Roadworks are the most common application, but portable traffic lights are also used on bridge repairs, intersection upgrades, and temporary access changes around construction sites where two-way traffic needs to share a single lane. They remove the need for a traffic controller to remain on site throughout the closure, since the lights cycle automatically once set up correctly.

Correct placement is as important as the equipment itself. Sight lines need to be clear in both directions, particularly on a bend or a hill crest where oncoming traffic may not see the light until they're close to it. The distance between the two units needs to account for the length of the single-lane section, giving approaching vehicles enough warning to stop comfortably rather than braking hard at the last moment.

## TMR Compliance Requirements

Any [traffic management equipment](https://www.flexihire.com.au/traffic-management/) used on a Queensland road needs to meet Transport and Main Roads requirements. Non-compliant equipment risks a fine, can hold up the job while the issue is resolved, and creates a genuine safety risk on an active road. Equipment that's properly maintained and certified to TMR standards reduces delays with approvals and performs the way it's meant to on site.

Compliance requirements apply just as much to jobs with specific conditions, such as school zones, event traffic, or a busy town centre intersection. A lights setup that works on a quiet rural road may need adjusting for peak drop-off and pick-up times, or for event bump-in and bump-out periods, so confirming the site context with your provider before booking helps avoid a mismatch between what's booked and what the site needs.

## Solar Power and Building a Complete Setup

Road and civil work often takes place away from mains power, which is where solar-powered [traffic light](https://www.flexihire.com.au/traffic-management/traffic-lights/)s are the practical option. They operate independently of mains power, removing the need for a generator running continuously on site, and most units are built to handle several cloudy days on battery reserve without an issue.

Traffic lights rarely manage a larger site on their own. Variable message boards warn drivers of upcoming conditions, whether that's a closure, a detour, or a reduced speed limit, while barriers physically separate the work zone from moving traffic. Combining all three creates a complete traffic management setup rather than a partial one, and confirming the full plan with your hire provider before the job starts ensures the equipment booked matches what the site actually requires from day one.

## Night Work Requirements

Night works add additional requirements, since lights need to remain clearly visible in the dark from a sufficient distance, often paired with lighting towers or reflective signage. On a live road, confirming what backup or callout support your hire provider offers is worth doing before the job starts, since a unit that fails mid-job means a lane that's no longer being managed correctly.

## Setting Up and Maintaining the Equipment

Before a unit is deployed, confirm it's been checked for battery charge, correct light sequencing, and that mounting or towing components are secure for the site conditions. On multi-day jobs, particularly during cloudy weather, checking battery levels periodically prevents the unit from running down unexpectedly. If a unit shows signs of reduced visibility or irregular cycling, it should be swapped out rather than left in place, given the safety risk involved on an active road.

Spacing between units should be recalculated if the length of the closure changes partway through the job, since a closure that's extended without adjusting light placement can leave insufficient stopping distance for approaching traffic. This is a common oversight on longer or staged roadworks projects.

Traffic Light Hire for Roadworks and Temporary Site Access

We explain the difference between submersible and trash pumps and how to choose the right one for flooding or site work.

Water on a job site needs to be moved fast and moved correctly. Whether the issue is a flooded excavation, rising groundwater, or flood clean-up after heavy rain, the pump you choose determines how quickly the site is workable again. This guide covers when to use a submersible pump versus a trash pump, how to size the job correctly, and what to check before booking either.

## Why a Submersible Pump Outperforms a Standard Pump for This Type of Job

A submersible pump operates underwater rather than sitting above the surface trying to draw water in. This design allows it to keep working once water levels drop or the water becomes contaminated with debris, whereas a standard surface pump loses prime and stalls under the same conditions. Builders rely on submersible pumps on excavation sites where groundwater continues to seep in. Miners run them in pits and sumps for continuous operation. Many homeowners only hire one after a shed floods, once they realise bailing water out by hand isn't practical for the volume involved.

During a Queensland wet season, an excavation site can take on water quickly. Footings, pipework and formwork are all affected once water sits in the trench. A [submersible pump](https://www.flexihire.com.au/pump-equipment/submersible-pumps/) keeps removing water as fast as it re-enters, which keeps the crew working instead of waiting for the site to drain on its own. For longer jobs, the pump needs to run for extended periods without overheating, and continue operating if it draws in small amounts of grit.

## How to Manage Contaminated Water After Flooding

Flood clean-up is a separate problem to groundwater management. Once a property has taken on water, a shed, a low-lying yard, or a basement in an older property, removing it quickly limits the damage. Water left standing for several days leads to mould growth, warped boards, and a slab that doesn't fully recover.

A standard pump isn't built for this kind of work, since floodwater typically carries leaves, mud and small debris that clog a standard pump within minutes. A [trash pump](https://www.flexihire.com.au/pump-equipment/large-pumps/trash-pump-4in-petrol/) is designed to move that material without stopping, which makes it the correct choice for post-flood sludge, pond clean-outs, and water coming out of a dam.

## Electric vs Petrol: Choosing the Right Power Source

Power source affects where and how long a pump can run. Electric submersible pumps are quieter, produce no exhaust, and suit residential jobs, indoor basements, or sites where noise and fumes are a concern. They do rely on a nearby power source, so an extension lead run or an on-site generator is required if mains power isn't accessible.

Petrol-powered trash pumps are built for larger volumes and sites without power access, which makes them the standard choice for flood clean-up, dam work, and construction sites still without power connected. They run independently of mains supply but need fuel management on longer jobs, so factor that into planning if the pump is expected to run unattended overnight.

**Sizing the Job Correctly**

Three factors determine which pump is required for a job: flow rate (the volume of water that needs to move, measured in litres per hour), head height (the vertical and horizontal distance the water needs to travel), and water quality (what's actually in it). A dewatering pump built for clear water isn't suited to handling sludge, and pushing water further or higher than the pump is rated for reduces its effective flow rate significantly.

A small residential job, such as clearing a flooded garden bed or a minor basement leak, typically needs a lower-capacity electric pump moving a few thousand litres per hour. A construction excavation or flood clean-up involving standing water across a larger area needs a higher-capacity petrol trash pump capable of moving significantly more volume per hour, particularly if the water contains debris that reduces flow efficiency. Undersizing a pump on a larger job costs more time than it saves, so confirming pump size and expected head height with your local branch before booking is worth doing on any job where the volume is uncertain.

**Setting Up the Pump Correctly**

Hose length is as important as the pump itself. It needs to reach far enough to discharge water safely without restricting flow, and longer hose runs reduce overall flow rate, so this should be factored into pump selection rather than treated as an afterthought. The discharge point also needs to be clear of the area being pumped, since water flowing back toward the site defeats the purpose of the job.

Before starting any pump, check that the inlet strainer or filter is clear of debris, since a blocked inlet is one of the most common reasons a pump underperforms on site. For petrol units, confirm fuel level and oil before starting a longer job, and for electric units, confirm the extension lead is rated for outdoor and wet conditions.

## Working Safely with Pumps in Wet Conditions

Electrical safety matters more with submersible pumps than most other hired equipment, given the pump is designed to run underwater. The power connection, extension leads and any switchboard equipment need to stay clear of standing water and run to a properly rated, weatherproof outlet or generator rather than being trailed across wet or muddy ground. A residual current device (safety switch) should be used on any electrical connection running to a pump on site, and this is standard practice on most Flexihire electric pump hires.

Petrol trash pumps carry their own risks around exhaust fumes and refuelling, so they should be run in ventilated areas and refuelled only once the engine has cooled. On a commercial site, these checks are typically covered under standard site safety procedures, but they're worth confirming even on a smaller residential job.

## Where to Hire Submersible and Trash Pumps

Dewatering jobs often run a full day or longer where a site continues taking on water from rain or runoff. Flexihire offers day, week and longer project-term hire, with the option to extend if the job runs on. Submersible and trash pumps are available across our branches throughout Queensland and Northern NSW, and our team can help match the right pump to the job so you're not paying for capacity you don't need. Diesel, petrol or electric, which air compressor suits your site? We break down PSI, CFM and what's safe to run indoors.

Choosing the wrong air compressor for a job does not just slow things down. It means running undersized equipment that cannot meet the demand of your air tools, dealing with a fuel type that does not suit your site, or operating a machine in an environment it was not designed for. Getting the compressor right from the start determines whether your tools perform at full capacity and whether your job runs to schedule.

Flexihire offers air compressor hire across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern NSW, including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns, Gladstone, Emerald, Moranbah, and Grafton. This guide breaks down how diesel, petrol, and electric air compressors differ, which fuel type suits which site conditions, the PSI and CFM requirements for common air tools, and how to find compatible tools available for hiring alongside your compressor.

## Diesel vs Petrol vs Electric: The Core Differences

**Diesel Air Compressors**

Diesel air compressors are the standard choice for large-scale outdoor construction, civil, and industrial sites. They deliver high output volumes, run on diesel fuel without requiring a mains power connection, and are built for extended continuous operation in demanding conditions. [Diesel compressors](https://www.flexihire.com.au/air-compressors-tools/air-compressors-diesel/) are typically the largest and heaviest of the three types, mounted on skids or trailers for site positioning.

Diesel air compressor hire is suited to:

- Remote or rural sites with no mains power connection
- High-demand applications requiring sustained high-volume air output
- Civil and road construction sites where pneumatic tools run continuously
- Mining and resource sites with extended shift requirements
- Applications running multiple air tools simultaneously from a single compressor

**Petrol Air Compressors**

Petrol air compressors offer a balance between portability and power output. They do not require mains power, making them suitable for outdoor and remote locations, but are lighter and more manoeuvrable than diesel units, making them practical for smaller sites and tradespeople who need to move the compressor between locations during a job.

Petrol air compressor hire is suited to:

- Smaller construction sites and residential renovation work
- Trade use where the compressor needs to be moved between locations
- Sites where diesel fuel supply is not available or practical
- Applications requiring moderate air output for a single or small number of air tools

**Electric Air Compressors**

Electric air compressors require a mains power connection and produce no exhaust emissions during operation. They run more quietly than combustion-engine models, making them the appropriate choice for enclosed spaces, indoor applications, and sites with noise or emission restrictions.

Electric compressors are the correct choice for:

- Indoor workshop and factory environments where exhaust emissions are not acceptable
- Commercial premises, shopping centres, and occupied buildings
- Air tool hire in Brisbane workshops or enclosed trade sites with reliable mains power
- Applications where noise restrictions apply
- Sites where fuel storage and handling are not permitted

## Which Fuel Type Suits Which Site Condition?

**Mains Power Available, Indoor or Enclosed Space**

Use an electric compressor. It eliminates exhaust fumes, reduces noise, and avoids the need to store fuel on site. This is the correct configuration for any indoor pneumatic tool application, including indoor tiling, joinery, spray finishing, or workshop air supply.

**Outdoor Site, No Mains Power, Moderate Demand**

Use a petrol compressor. It provides a portable, self-contained air supply that is easier to move around a site than a diesel unit and is appropriate for single-trade applications on residential construction, maintenance, and renovation sites.

**Outdoor Site, Remote or High Demand**

Use a diesel compressor. For high-volume applications, remote sites, or jobs running multiple air tools from a single machine, diesel delivers the sustained output and fuel autonomy that petrol and electric compressors cannot match.

## PSI and CFM: Matching the Compressor to Your Air Tools

Two figures determine whether a compressor can run your tools: PSI (pounds per square inch) and CFM (cubic feet per minute).

PSI is the pressure at which the compressor delivers air. CFM is the volume of air the compressor delivers at that pressure. Most air tools specify both minimum operating pressure (PSI) and minimum air consumption (CFM). The compressor must meet both figures simultaneously to run the tool correctly.

## Common Air Tool Requirements

- Nail gun (brad and framing): 70 to 100 PSI, 2 to 5 CFM
- Impact wrench (1/2 inch): 90 to 100 PSI, 4 to 6 CFM
- Die grinder: 90 PSI, 4 to 8 CFM
- Spray gun (conventional): 40 to 60 PSI, 6 to 12 CFM
- Jackhammer / pneumatic breaker: 90 PSI, 25 to 50 CFM or more
- Sand blaster: 100 PSI, 10 to 25 CFM depending on nozzle size
- Tyre inflator: 90 to 120 PSI, low CFM

When running multiple tools from a single compressor, add the total CFM demand of all tools running simultaneously and confirm the compressor's rated output exceeds that total.

## Can You Use a Petrol Compressor Indoors?

No. Petrol and diesel air compressors produce carbon monoxide as a combustion by-product. Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless gas that accumulates rapidly in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces and is potentially fatal. Running any combustion-engine compressor in an enclosed space, shed, garage, or building is a serious safety hazard regardless of the ventilation arrangement.

For any indoor application, always use an electric compressor connected to a main power supply. If mains power is not available indoors, extend the air hose from a petrol or diesel compressor positioned outdoors in a well-ventilated location.

## Compatible Air Tools Available for Hire

Flexihire offers a range of pneumatic air tools for hire alongside compressors, allowing you to hire an integrated air supply and tool package from a single branch. Compatible tools available alongside air compressor hire include:

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between a diesel and an electric air compressor?

A diesel air compressor uses a diesel engine to drive the compressor pump, making it self-contained and suited to remote outdoor sites with no main power. An electric air compressor runs from a mains power supply, produces no exhaust emissions, and operates more quietly, making it the correct choice for indoor, enclosed, and noise-sensitive environments. Diesel delivers higher output for demanding applications; electric is the only safe option indoors.

### What size air compressor do I need for a nail gun or impact wrench?

A nail gun requires approximately 70 to 100 PSI and 2 to 5 CFM depending on the type. A half-inch impact wrench requires 90 to 100 PSI and 4 to 6 CFM. For a single nail gun or impact wrench, a small to mid-size compressor with a rated output of 6 to 8 CFM at 100 PSI is generally sufficient. For multiple tools or heavy impact use, select a larger unit. Confirm the tool's rated CFM requirement and match it to the compressor output.

### Can I use a petrol air compressor indoors?

No. Petrol and diesel compressors produce carbon monoxide exhaust, which is lethal in enclosed spaces. Never operate a petrol or diesel compressor indoors, in a garage, shed, or any enclosed area. For indoor applications, use an electric compressor. If mains power is not available, position the petrol or diesel compressor outdoors and run an air hose through a window or door to the indoor work area.

### What PSI do I need for common air tools?

Most air tools operate between 70 and 120 PSI. Nail guns typically require 70 to 100 PSI. Impact wrenches, die grinders, and spray guns typically require 90 to 100 PSI. Pneumatic breakers and jackhammers require 90 PSI but at high volume (25 to 50 CFM). Tyre inflators require up to 120 PSI. Always check the tool's rated operating pressure and confirm the compressor's maximum output meets or exceeds that figure.

Air Compressor Hire: Diesel vs Petrol vs Electric - What's Right for Your Job?

Need reach, lift and rough-terrain capability in one machine? Compare telehandlers to forklifts and cranes, and find out what licence you'll need.

On a construction site, a machine that can lift heavy materials and place them precisely at height eliminates a significant amount of manual handling, crane time, and operational delay. That machine is the telehandler, and for contractors across Queensland and Northern NSW, telehandler hire is one of the most productive equipment decisions on a mid-to-large construction project.

Flexihire supplies telehandlers for hire across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern NSW, including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns, Gladstone, Emerald, Moranbah, and Grafton. This guide covers what a telehandler is, how it differs from a forklift or crane, which project types need one, how to select the right reach and lift capacity, licensing requirements, site considerations, and how to arrange hire.

## What Is a Telehandler?

A telehandler, also known as a telescopic handler or reach forklift, is a rough-terrain materials handling machine fitted with a telescopic boom that extends both outward and upward. A fork attachment or bucket is fitted to the end of the boom, allowing the operator to lift and place loads at height and at a distance from the machine's base.

Unlike a standard warehouse forklift, which lifts vertically in front of the mast, a telehandler's boom extends telescopically, giving it both vertical reach and horizontal outreach. This combination makes it suited to sites where materials need to be placed at height, over obstacles, or at a distance the machine cannot physically position itself next to.

## Telehandler vs Forklift vs Crane: Key Differences

**Telehandler vs Forklift**

A standard counterbalance forklift lifts loads vertically in front of the mast to a limited height, typically three to six metres. It is designed for warehouse floors, hardstand areas, and flat, stable surfaces. A telehandler extends its boom outward and upward, providing reach heights of eight to twenty metres or more depending on the model, and operates effectively on rough, uneven terrain. A telehandler can work on sites where a forklift cannot safely or practically operate.

**Telehandler vs Crane**

A crane provides superior lift capacity and extreme vertical height, but requires significant setup time, an engineered lift plan for most applications, and qualified rigging personnel. A telehandler is a self-contained, operator-driven machine that can be repositioned quickly across a site without a lift plan, making it far more practical for repetitive materials placement tasks such as loading roofing materials onto a structure, stacking wall frames, or supplying materials to upper floors.

For large, complex lifts above the capacity of a telehandler, a crane is the appropriate choice. For day-to-day materials handling and placement at height across a construction or agricultural site, a telehandler provides a significantly more efficient and cost-effective solution.

## Project Types That Require a Telehandler

**Construction Framing and Roofing Materials**

Telehandlers are standard equipment on residential and commercial construction sites during the framing, roofing, and cladding phases. They are used to lift structural timber, wall frames, roof trusses, steel sections, and cladding materials from the delivery truck to the working floor level, eliminating the manual handling required to move materials by hand or with a conventional forklift.

On multi-storey residential builds and commercial tilt-panel or portal frame constructions, a telehandler with sufficient reach height and lift capacity removes the bottleneck of manual materials handling and allows tradespeople to focus on installation rather than logistics.

**Agricultural Applications**

On farms and rural properties, telehandlers handle silage bales, feed sacks, fertiliser pallets, and machinery components across uneven paddock terrain. Their rough-terrain capability and attachment versatility make them a practical alternative to farm forklifts on sites where the ground is soft, sloped, or uneven.

**Mining and Industrial Site Logistics**

In mining and heavy industrial environments, telehandlers are used for materials logistics including placing structural components, lifting and positioning equipment packages, loading and unloading vehicles, and general site handling tasks that require combining reach with terrain mobility. Flexihire's branch network across Queensland's resource regions, including Moranbah, Emerald, and Mackay, supports mining and industrial clients requiring materials handling equipment on short or extended hire.

**Civil and Infrastructure Projects**

On civil projects including bridge construction, pipeline work, and infrastructure maintenance, telehandlers handle materials and equipment in environments that preclude the use of larger cranes. Their combination of mobility, reach, and lifting capacity allows civil contractors to handle materials efficiently across complex and varying site conditions.

## Choosing the Right Telehandler: Reach Height and Lift Capacity

Selecting the correct telehandler for your project requires matching two key parameters: maximum reach height and rated lift capacity at that height.

**Maximum Reach Height**

Telehandler reach height determines the highest point at which a load can be placed. For residential framing and roofing on single-storey structures, a machine with eight to ten metres of reach is typically sufficient. For two and three-storey construction, twelve to fifteen metres of reach is required. For industrial and high-rise applications, machines with eighteen metres or more of reach are available.

It is important to note that the stated maximum reach height is the full extension of the boom. When placing loads at maximum reach, the rated lift capacity at that height is significantly reduced compared to the capacity at shorter extensions.

**Lift Capacity at Reach**

All telehandler lift capacity ratings are expressed as a load chart that specifies the maximum safe working load at various boom extensions and heights. A telehandler rated at 3.5 tonnes at the carriage may only lift 1.2 tonnes at full horizontal extension. Before selecting a machine, confirm the weight of the heaviest load you need to place and the maximum extension at which it will need to be placed, then verify that the machine's load chart supports that combination.

Flexihire's team can assist with load chart review and machine selection when you enquire about [telehandler hire in Queensland](https://www.flexihire.com.au/materials-handling-equipment/telehandlers/) and Northern NSW.

## Telehandler Licence Requirements in Queensland

In Queensland, the licence required to operate a telehandler depends on how it is being used on site.

**Forklift Truck Licence (LF)**

If the telehandler is being used to lift loads in a manner consistent with forklift operation (that is, raising and placing loads with forks), the operator is required to hold a valid High Risk Work (HRW) Forklift Truck (LF) licence issued under Queensland workplace health and safety legislation. This is the most common licence requirement for telehandler hire on construction and industrial sites in Queensland.

Operators without a current LF licence must not operate a telehandler in this capacity on a Queensland worksite. Licence requirements can be confirmed with your nearest Flexihire branch at the time of booking.

**Crane Licences**

If the telehandler is fitted with a man basket or jib attachment that changes the nature of the lift, additional licensing or permit requirements may apply. Consult your site's Work Health and Safety Management Plan and confirm any additional requirements with Flexihire prior to hire.

### Site Considerations

**Ground Conditions**

Telehandlers are designed for rough terrain operation, but ground bearing capacity must be assessed before positioning the machine for a lift. Soft ground, recently disturbed fill, or sub-base over services can collapse under the point load of a telehandler during a lift. If ground conditions are uncertain, consult a geotechnical engineer or site manager before proceeding.

**Outrigger Use**

Some telehandler models are fitted with outriggers that extend from the chassis to provide additional stability during lifts at maximum reach. When outriggers are required by the machine's load chart for a specific lift, they must be deployed and levelled on firm ground before the lift commences. Never perform a lift that requires outrigger deployment without first correctly setting the outriggers.

**Overhead Hazards**

Before extending the boom, confirm that there are no overhead power lines, structural elements, or other hazards within the operating envelope of the boom at full extension. Telehandler-powerline contact is a serious and preventable incident type on Queensland construction sites.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a telehandler used for?

A telehandler is used to lift and place materials at height on construction, agricultural, mining, and industrial sites. Common applications include placing roof trusses and wall frames on construction sites, lifting palletised materials to upper floors, handling agricultural bales and equipment, and supporting civil and infrastructure project logistics.

### Do you need a licence to operate a telehandler in Queensland?

Yes. In Queensland, operating a telehandler to lift loads with forks on a worksite requires the operator to hold a valid High Risk Work (HRW) Forklift Truck (LF) licence. Additional licence or permit requirements may apply depending on the attachments used and the nature of the lifts being performed. Confirm requirements with Flexihire prior to booking.

### What is the difference between a telehandler and a forklift?

A standard forklift lifts loads vertically in front of the mast to a limited height on flat, stable surfaces. A telehandler uses a telescopic boom to extend loads both outward and upward, providing greater reach of height and the ability to operate on rough terrain. Telehandlers are suited to construction and outdoor sites where conventional forklifts are impractical.

### How much can a telehandler lift?

Lift capacity varies significantly by model and boom extension. A telehandler rated at 3.5 tonnes at the carriage will lift considerably less at full horizontal extension. Always refer to the machine's load chart to confirm the safe working load at the specific reach height and extension required for your job. Flexihire can assist with load chart review during the hire enquiry process.

Managing pedestrian movement and public safety at events and construction sites is a legal and practical obligation for event organisers and civil contractors alike. Whether you are managing crowd flow at a festival, fencing a construction perimeter on a busy street, or channelling foot traffic through a worksite, crowd control barrier hire provides a fast, flexible, and cost-effective solution.

Flexihire supplies crowd control barriers for hire across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern NSW, including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns, Gladstone, Emerald, Moranbah, and Grafton. This guide covers the main applications for crowd control barriers, how interlocking systems work, calculating the quantity you need, pedestrian management best practices, Queensland compliance requirements, and how to arrange delivery across the state.

## Main Applications for Crowd Control Barriers

**Events and Festivals**

Crowd control barriers are a core component of event safety infrastructure. At concerts, festivals, markets, sporting events, and public gatherings, barriers define pedestrian routes, manage queue systems, separate crowd zones, and create safety perimeters around stages, vendor areas, and infrastructure. Properly configured crowd barriers reduce crowd pressure, improve emergency access, and allow event staff to manage large numbers of people efficiently.

For small community events, a basic quantity of interlocking barriers may be sufficient to channel queues and define entry and exit points. For large-scale public events, barrier layouts should form part of a formal event management plan submitted to the relevant local council or authority.

**Construction Site Perimeters**

On active construction sites in Queensland urban areas, crowd control barriers are used to establish and maintain site perimeters along public footpaths and roadways. They protect pedestrians from site hazards, define exclusion zones around overhead work, and provide a physical boundary that complies with site safety requirements under Queensland workplace health and safety legislation.

Barriers are commonly deployed at the perimeter of excavations, demolition zones, and building sites in retail and commercial precincts where foot traffic is ongoing around the site boundary.

**Pedestrian Channelling and Traffic Management**

Beyond events and construction, crowd control barriers are used to channel pedestrian movement in any situation where direction and separation are required. Common applications include sporting event entry management, pedestrian diversions around roadworks, school crossing management during special events, and temporary queue management at commercial premises.

## Interlocking Barrier Systems: How They Work

Standard crowd control barriers are designed as interlocking modular units, typically manufactured from galvanised steel or aluminium. Each barrier section is fitted with male and female coupling hooks at each end that connect to adjacent sections.

Once connected, the interlocking system creates a continuous, stable barrier line that resists lateral movement and is significantly more difficult to breach or topple than individual non-linked sections. The interlocking mechanism allows:

- Rapid assembly and configuration on site without tools
- Flexible layout changes as event or site requirements evolve
- Curved and angled configurations by adjusting the angle between linked sections
- Easy breakdown and restacking for transport and storage after hire

[Crowd barriers for hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/traffic-management/barriers/) from Flexihire are compatible with standard interlocking dimensions used across the events and construction industry in Queensland and Northern NSW, ensuring they integrate with any existing barrier stock on site.

## Calculating How Many Barriers You Need

The number of barriers required depends on the total linear metres of perimeter to be enclosed or the length of pedestrian routes to be defined. As a practical guide:

**Event Crowd Barriers**

For a simple single queue lane at an event entry, calculate the total queue length and divide by the width of each barrier section (typically 1.2 to 2.5 metres per section depending on the barrier type). Add extra sections for corner turns and entry gate gaps. For staged areas, calculate the perimeter of the exclusion zone and divide by the barrier section width.

As a rule of thumb, a small outdoor market or community event with a single-entry queue and vendor perimeter may require 30 to 80 barrier sections. A mid-size festival with multiple entry points and crowd zones typically requires several hundred sections.

**Construction Site Perimeters**

Measure the full perimeter of the site boundary that runs adjacent to public access areas, footpaths, or roadways. Divide by the width of the barrier section to determine the minimum quantity. Allow additional sections for gate openings, changes of direction, and any temporary adjustments required during the project.

Contact Flexihire on 1300 353 944 or use the online quote tool at flexihire.com.au to confirm quantities and availability for your specific site layout.

## Pedestrian Management Best Practices

Deploying crowd control barriers effectively requires more than placing them end to end. The following principles improve both safety and operational outcomes.

**Define Clear Entry and Exit Points**

Every barrier configuration should have clearly defined and clearly signposted entry and exit points. Ambiguous access points lead to crowd bunching and pressure at uncontrolled sections of the barrier line.

**Avoid Dead Ends**

Never configure a barrier layout that channels pedestrians into a dead end without an alternative exit route. In an emergency, a crowd that cannot reverse through a narrow lane can result in crush injuries. All pedestrian lanes must have a clear and accessible exit at both ends.

**Maintain Emergency Access**

Barrier layouts must preserve unobstructed access for emergency services vehicles and personnel. A minimum 3.5 metre access lane should be maintained through or alongside any barrier configuration to allow emergency vehicle entry.

**Ground Surface and Stability**

On soft ground or uneven surfaces, ensure barrier feet are fully in contact with the ground and that the interlocking connections are secured before the area is open to the public. On sloped ground, additional ballast or anchoring may be required to prevent barrier sections from shifting under crowd pressure.

## Queensland Compliance Considerations

**Public Events**

In Queensland, events held on public land require a temporary event licence or permit from the relevant local council, and an event management plan must typically be submitted and approved before the event date. The event management plan will generally specify crowd management infrastructure requirements, including the type, quantity, and layout of crowd barriers. Event organisers should consult with their relevant council and refer to the Queensland Government's Events Management Framework for guidance.

For events near roads or where pedestrian traffic management affects road users, a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) prepared by a qualified professional may be required.

**Construction Sites**

Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld) and associated regulations, construction sites that interface with public areas are required to implement appropriate controls to protect members of the public from site hazards. Physical barriers that define the site perimeter and prevent unauthorised public access are a standard control measure for all construction sites in public areas. The site's Work Health and Safety Management Plan should document the barrier layout and inspection regime.

For high-risk construction work near roads, the applicable Australian Standard for roadwork safety (AS 1742) and the Queensland Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) apply to the deployment and signage of barriers in traffic environments.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are the crowd control barriers used for?

Crowd control barriers are used to manage pedestrian movement, define site perimeters, separate crowd zones, establish queue systems, and protect the public from hazards at events, festivals, construction sites, roadworks, and sporting events. They are a standard safety infrastructure component for any site or event where the movement and safety of pedestrians needs to be actively managed.

### How many crowd control barriers do I need for an event?

The quantity depends on the total perimeter or queue length to be defined. As a general guide, divide the total linear metres of barrier required by the width of each barrier section (typically 1.2 to 2.5 metres per section). Allow additional sections for corner turns, entry gates, and contingency adjustments. Flexihire can assist with quantity calculations based on your event layout when you enquire.

### Are crowd control barriers required by law at construction sites in Queensland?

Queensland workplace health and safety legislation requires construction sites that interface with public areas to implement controls protecting the public from site hazards. Physical barriers defining the site perimeter and preventing unauthorised access are a standard and expected control measure. Specific requirements depend on the nature of the works and the proximity to public pedestrian and traffic areas. Consult the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld) and your Site Safety Management Plan for applicable requirements.

### What is the difference between crowd control barriers and bollards?

Crowd control barriers are interlocking steel or aluminium sections that form continuous barrier lines for managing pedestrian movement and defining perimeters. They are designed for quick assembly and high crowd-volume applications. Bollards are individual upright posts that are spaced apart to prevent vehicle access while allowing pedestrian passage. Bollards are suited to vehicle exclusion zones, not crowd channelling. For pedestrian management at events and construction sites, crowd control barriers are the appropriate choice.

Prepping a floor for tiles, epoxy or a polished finish? Get the lowdown on diamond disc grades, wet vs dry grinding and how to achieve a level result.

Getting a concrete floor flat, clean, and ready for a coating, overlay, or tile finish takes more than a good eye. It takes the right equipment, the right disc, and a systematic approach to grinding. Whether you are preparing a slab for epoxy, levelling a high spot before tiling, or removing a paint coating before resurfacing, concrete grinder hire gives you access to a machine that can achieve a professional result without the cost of trade ownership.

Flexihire supplies floor grinder hire across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern NSW, including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Cairns, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Emerald, Moranbah, and Grafton. Whether you are a DIYer tackling a garage floor, a tiler preparing a substrate, or a concreter resurfacing a commercial slab, this guide covers everything you need to know to get the job done properly.

## What Is a Concrete Grinder Used For?

A concrete grinder uses a rotating disc fitted with diamond segments or abrasive bonds to abrade the surface of concrete. It removes thin layers of the slab, allowing you to:

- Level high spots and surface irregularities before tiling or coating
- Remove paint, adhesive, coatings, and sealers from concrete floors
- Open the surface profile of the slab before applying an epoxy or polymer overlay
- Smooth rough concrete or remove laitance from freshly poured slabs
- Expose aggregate for a polished or decorative concrete finish

[Concrete grinding hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/concreting-equipment/concrete-grinding/) is suited to a wide range of surface areas, from single rooms and garage floors to large commercial spaces and warehouse slabs. For smaller or tighter areas, a handheld angle grinder with a diamond cup wheel can complement a floor grinder for edges and corners.

## When to Hire vs When to Use Trade-Owned Equipment

For concreters and tilers who grind floors regularly, owning a grinder may be cost-effective. For everyone else, concrete grinder hire near me is the smarter option. Hiring makes sense when:

- The job is a one-off or infrequent task such as a single residential renovation
- The project requires a larger or more powerful machine than you typically use
- You need a specific disc grade or machine configuration you do not currently own
- The scope is large enough to justify professional equipment but not frequent enough to justify buying it

Flexihire's equipment hire range covers concreting equipment, compaction tools, and surface preparation machines suited to both trade and DIY customers across Queensland & Northern NSW.

## Surface Preparation: What to Do Before You Grind

Grinding without adequate preparation leads to inconsistent results and unnecessary wear on diamond discs. Follow these steps before starting the grinder.

**1. Clear and Clean the Surface**

Remove all furniture, equipment, and floor coverings from the work area. Sweep the slab thoroughly and remove any loose debris. If the floor has a pre-existing coating such as paint, sealer, or adhesive, assess the adhesion and thickness before selecting your disc grade.

**2. Identify High Spots and Hollow Areas**

Use a long straight edge or level to identify high spots and low areas across the slab. Mark high spots with chalk. Grinding focuses on these areas to bring them level with the surrounding slab. Low areas cannot be corrected by grinding and may require a levelling compound prior to or after surface preparation.

**3. Check for Contamination**

Oil, grease, and chemical contamination prevent diamond discs from abrading effectively. Clean contaminated areas with a degreaser and allow to dry before grinding. Heavily contaminated concrete may require multiple cleaning passes before grinding will produce a consistent result.

**4. Dial Before You Dig**

If you are cutting or grinding near structural joints, drains, or areas with embedded conduit, check your slab drawings or call 1100 (Dial Before You Dig) to identify any services below the surface.

## Diamond Disc Grades: Choosing the Right Grit

Diamond disc selection is one of the most important decisions in concrete grinding. The grit rating refers to the coarseness of the abrasive bond and determines how aggressively the disc cuts and what surface profile it leaves behind.

**Coarse Grits (16 to 30 Grit)**

Coarse discs remove material quickly and are used for heavy stock removal. Use a coarse disc when:

- Removing thick paint, epoxy coatings, or adhesive from the slab
- Flattening significant high spots or lippage on uneven concrete
- Opening a very dense or sealed concrete surface before finer grinding

Coarse grinding leaves a rough profile. It is the starting point, not the finishing step.

**Medium Grits (40 to 80 Grit)**

Medium discs are used after coarse grinding to refine the surface and reduce the scratch pattern left by the coarser disc. Use medium discs when:

Preparing a surface for an epoxy or polymer overlay
Transitioning between coarse removal and fine finishing
General slab preparation for tiling where a moderate surface profile is acceptable

**Fine Grits (100 to 400 Grit and Above)**

Fine discs are used for surface finishing, polished concrete, and final smoothing. Use fine discs when:

- Polishing a slab to a smooth or semi-gloss finish
- Preparing a very flat, clean surface for a thin-film coating or sealer
- Finishing after medium grinding to reduce visible scratch lines

For most surface preparation and tiling projects, a progression from coarse to medium grit is sufficient. Polished concrete finishes require a full sequence from coarse through fine, often including resin-bonded pads at the high end of the grit scale.

## Wet vs Dry Concrete Grinding

Floor grinding generates fine concrete dust that contains respirable crystalline silica, a serious respiratory hazard with prolonged exposure. Managing dust during grinding is a legal requirement under Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011. There are two approaches: wet grinding and dry grinding with vacuum extraction.

**Wet Grinding**

Wet grinding introduces a small, controlled flow of water to the grinding surface. The water suppresses dust at the source, extends diamond disc life, and prevents overheating of the concrete surface. It is the most effective method for dust control on outdoor slabs and in ventilated areas.

The trade-off with wet grinding is slurry management. The water mixed with concrete dust creates a grey slurry that must be collected and disposed of properly. It cannot be washed into stormwater drains and must be contained, allowed to dry, and bagged as solid waste.

**Dry Grinding with Vacuum Extraction**

Dry grinding is the preferred method for indoor concrete grinding, where water use is impractical and slurry disposal presents difficulties. The concrete grinder is connected to a vacuum dust extractor that captures airborne dust directly at the source. A properly configured extraction system keeps dust levels within acceptable limits for enclosed spaces.

For indoor concrete grinding hire in Queensland & Northern NSW, Flexihire can advise on appropriate dust extraction equipment to hire alongside the floor grinder to meet silica dust management requirements. Always confirm that the vacuum unit is rated for fine concrete dust and fitted with a HEPA filter.

## Practical Tips for Achieving a Level, Clean Finish

**Work in Overlapping Passes**

Move the floor grinder in slow; parallel passes with each pass overlapping the previous one by approximately one-third of the disc width. This prevents unground strips between passes and ensures consistent surface coverage.

**Do Not Linger on One Spot**

Holding the grinder stationary on a single area removes too much material and creates a low spot that is difficult to correct. Keep the machine moving at a consistent pace to achieve even stock removal across the surface.

**Check Progress Regularly**

Stop the grinder periodically and check the surface with a straight edge. This allows you to track how much material has been removed and identify any areas that require additional attention before moving on.

**Progress Through Grit Stages**

If using multiple disc grades, complete the full area with each grade before moving to the next. Jumping directly from coarse to fine grit without completing the intermediate stage leaves deep scratches that the finer disc cannot remove efficiently.

**Edge Work**

Floor grinders cannot reach the edges and corners of a slab. Complete these areas with a handheld angle grinder fitted with an appropriate diamond cup wheel before or after grinding the main surface.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a concrete grinder used for?

A concrete grinder is used to remove surface material from concrete floors to level high spots, strip coatings and adhesives, open the slab surface profile before applying an epoxy or overlay, and polish concrete to a smooth or decorative finish. It is used by DIYers, tilers, and concreters across a range of residential and commercial surface preparation tasks.

### What diamond disc grade do I need for floor prep?

For removing paint or thick coatings, start with a coarse grit (16 to 30). For general surface preparation before tiling or an epoxy coating, a medium grit (40 to 80) is appropriate. For polished concrete or final smoothing, use fine grits (100 and above). Most surface preparation jobs begin with a coarse or medium disc and finish with a medium or fine disc depending on the coating or finish to be applied.

### Can I hire a concrete grinder for a small DIY job?

Yes. [Concrete grinding hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/concreting-equipment/concrete-grinding/) is available for single-day or weekend hire periods, making it practical for DIY projects including garage floors, laundry slabs, and indoor surface preparation before tiling. Flexihire serves both trade customers and DIYers across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern NSW.

### What is the difference between wet and dry concrete grinding?

Wet grinding uses water to suppress dust at the source and cool the diamond disc. It is effective for outdoor and ventilated areas but produces a slurry that must be disposed of correctly. Dry grinding uses vacuum extraction to capture dust from enclosed or indoor spaces where water use is not practical. Both methods are used to manage silica dust exposure, which is a legal requirement under Queensland work health and safety regulations.

Concrete Grinder Hire: How to Prep and Resurface Floors Like a Pro

Dust suppression, compaction support or a washdown, find out which water truck capacity suits your site, plus the licence you'll need to drive it.

Water trucks are one of the more versatile and frequently underestimated pieces of equipment on Queensland construction and civil sites. Whether the job involves dust suppression on a dry earthworks site, preparing a subgrade for compaction, washing down a concrete pour, or filling a remote storage tank, a water truck can handle applications that no fixed infrastructure can reach.

At Flexihire, we supply water trucks to construction, civil, and mining clients across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern NSW, including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Emerald, Moranbah, Townsville, Cairns, and Grafton. This guide covers the primary applications, how to choose the right capacity for your site, what to check before you hire, and what to expect when operating in regional and remote areas of Queensland and Northern NSW.

## Primary Uses of Water Trucks on Queensland and Northern NSW Construction and Civil Sites

### Dust Suppression

Dust suppression is the most common application for [water truck hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/vehicles-and-trucks/water-trucks/) on Queensland and Northern NSW civil and construction sites. On dry, unsealed haul roads, earthworks platforms, and stockpile areas, vehicle movement and wind generate significant volumes of fine dust. This creates visibility hazards for plant operators and light vehicles, causes respiratory health risks for workers, and can trigger compliance issues under site environmental management plans.

A water truck fitted with rear spray bars and side-mounted jets can treat a haul road or work platform rapidly, applying a controlled, even moisture layer that suppresses dust without saturating the surface. Regular pass intervals - typically every one to two hours in dry conditions - keep the surface treated throughout the shift. For large sites or high-traffic haul roads, a larger capacity unit reduces the number of refill runs required and keeps the truck on the road longer.

### Compaction Support

Achieving specified compaction on fills, subgrades, and road bases requires material to be within its optimal moisture content range. In the dry seasons and across inland regions, material moisture can drop below specification quickly between placement and compaction. A water truck working alongside a roller and grader allows the compaction team to bring moisture back to specification without delays and without relying on rainfall.

For compaction support work, precise water application is important - oversaturation is as problematic as under-moisture. Trucks with adjustable spray rates and forward-facing sprays give operators better control over water placement relative to the roller's path.

### Site Washdowns

Construction sites generate concrete slurry, mud, and equipment residue that must be managed to comply with site environmental controls and council requirements. Water trucks are used for washing down concrete agitator trucks, cleaning equipment before it leaves site, clearing concrete slurry from hardstand areas, and flushing sediment from temporary drainage paths.

For washdown applications, a truck with a high-pressure hose reel in addition to spray bars is the most practical option - it allows directed, high-pressure cleaning of machinery and hardstand surfaces in addition to broad-area water distribution.

### Pool and Tank Filling

In areas without reticulated water supply or where the volume required exceeds what standard connections can deliver in an acceptable timeframe, water trucks are used to fill swimming pools, rainwater tanks, firefighting storage tanks, and rural water storage. This is a common application across regional Queensland and Northern NSW where remote properties, new subdivisions, or construction compounds need bulk water delivered on demand.

For tank and pool filling, the key variables are truck capacity, fill rate, and travel distance to the water source. Larger trucks reduce the number of loads required and lower the total cost of delivery for high-volume jobs.

## Medium vs Large Water Truck Capacities: Choosing the Right Size

Water trucks are available in a range of tank capacities, and matching the truck size to your application has a direct impact on efficiency and cost. The two broad categories available through equipment hire in Queensland and Northern NSW are medium-capacity and large-capacity units.

### Medium Capacity Water Trucks

Medium capacity units typically carry between 4,000 and 8,000 litres. These trucks are better suited to:

- Smaller construction sites with limited haul road networks
- Urban sites where a large rigid truck would have difficulty manoeuvring
- Short-duration dust suppression or washdown tasks
- Pool and tank filling jobs where access is constrained
- Sites where the water source is nearby and frequent refill runs are practical

Medium trucks are generally more accessible for sites with tight turning circles, low overhead clearances, or restricted access routes - common constraints on residential construction sites and urban civil projects.

### Large Capacity Water Trucks

Large capacity units carry 10,000 litres and above. These are suited to:

- Major civil and infrastructure projects with extended haul road networks
- Remote and regional sites where water sources are distant and refill frequency needs to be minimised
- High-volume dust suppression on large earthworks platforms and mine access roads
- Bulk tank and storage filling where delivery volume per load is a priority
- Sites running extended shifts where the truck needs to operate continuously without regular refill stops

For most large civil projects in Queensland and Northern NSW - road upgrades, resource sector site preparation, and bulk earthworks - a larger capacity unit will deliver better productivity per shift hour. The additional cost per day is typically offset by the reduction in downtime spent refilling.

## What to Check Before Hiring a Water Truck

Before confirming a water truck hire booking, site managers should work through the following checklist to ensure the equipment will perform as required.

### Water Source and Fill Point

Confirm the location and type of water source available on or near the site. Water trucks can fill from standpipes, dams, bore water points, or council-metered supply points depending on site configuration. If the fill point requires a specific fitting, pump capacity, or connection type, confirm this with Flexihire before the truck arrives to avoid delays on the first day.

### Access and Ground Conditions

Assess whether the site access route can accommodate the loaded truck's weight and dimensions. A fully loaded large-capacity water truck is a heavy vehicle - access roads, temporary bridges, and site gates need to be checked for clearance and load rating before the truck goes to work. For sites with soft or wet ground, consider whether the truck will be able to operate without bogging, particularly in wet season conditions.

### Licence Requirements

The licence class required to operate a water truck depends on the vehicle's gross vehicle mass (GVM) and the number of axles, not simply the tank capacity. A two-axle rigid water truck over 8 tonnes GVM requires a minimum Medium Rigid (MR) licence, while a rigid truck with three or more axles requires a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence. A truck towing a water trailer or tanker over 9 tonnes GVM moves into Heavy Combination (HC) territory, and multi-trailer or road-train configurations require a Multi-Combination (MC) licence. Confirm the licence class required for the specific unit being hired and ensure your designated operator holds the appropriate current licence before the hire commences.

### Spray Configuration

Different applications require different spray configurations. Dust suppression requires wide, even rear and side coverage. Compaction support benefits from forward-facing sprays that apply water ahead of the roller. Washdowns require a high-pressure hose reel. Confirm with Flexihire that the unit being hired is fitted with the configuration appropriate for your primary application.

## Practical Considerations for Regional and Remote QLD and Northern NSW Sites

The geography of regional Queensland and Northern NSW means that water truck hire for these sites involves additional planning beyond a standard metropolitan booking.

Transport to site is a primary consideration. For remote sites in the resources sector - including locations near Emerald, Moranbah, and Mackay - the truck will need to be transported to site, either driven under its own power if within range or transported on a low loader for longer distances. Factor transport costs and lead times into your project planning.

Water availability at or near the site should be confirmed early. On remote civil and resources sites, bore water, on-site dams, or tankered-in supply may be the only options. If the water source is limited or intermittent, a larger-capacity truck that minimises refill frequency is a practical choice.

Fuel and servicing access for the truck itself must also be planned for extended remote hires. Discuss servicing arrangements with Flexihire's team when booking extended hire periods at remote locations.

Flexihire's branch network across regional Queensland and Northern NSW - including Rockhampton, Gladstone, Emerald, Moranbah, Mackay, Townsville, and Cairns, along with Grafton in Northern NSW - means local support is accessible for clients operating outside the south-east corner. Browse the full equipment hire range at flexihire.com.au or speak with your nearest branch to discuss regional hire arrangements.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are water trucks used for on construction sites?

On Queensland and Northern NSW construction and civil sites, water trucks are primarily used for dust suppression on haul roads and earthworks platforms, moisture conditioning of fill material for compaction, site washdowns including concrete truck cleaning and hardstand flushing, and bulk filling of tanks, dams, or storage facilities. The application determines the spray configuration and capacity required.

### What size water truck do I need?

For smaller urban sites, short-duration tasks, or constrained access routes, a medium-capacity unit between 4,000 and 8,000 litres is typically sufficient. For large civil sites, extended haul road networks, or remote locations where refill frequency needs to be minimised, a larger unit of 10,000 litres and above will deliver better productivity per shift. Contact Flexihire's team to discuss your site's specific requirements before booking.

### Do I need a special licence to drive a water truck in QLD or Northern NSW?

Yes. The class depends on the truck's gross vehicle mass and number of axles rather than tank capacity alone. A two-axle rigid water truck over 8 tonnes GVM requires at minimum a Medium Rigid (MR) licence, and a rigid truck with three or more axles requires a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence. Combination units - a truck towing a water trailer or tanker over 9 tonnes GVM - require a Heavy Combination (HC) licence, and multi-trailer configurations require a Multi-Combination (MC) licence. The operator must hold the appropriate current heavy vehicle licence class for the specific unit being hired. Flexihire can confirm the licence requirement for the truck you are booking.

### Can I hire a water truck for pool or tank filling?

Yes. [Water truck hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/vehicles-and-trucks/water-trucks/) for pool and tank filling is a common application across regional and suburban Queensland and Northern NSW, particularly for properties without reticulated water supply or where connection capacity is insufficient for the volume required. Contact your nearest Flexihire branch early to discuss transport logistics, lead times, and servicing arrangements for extended remote hires.

Water Truck Hire in QLD & Northern NSW: Uses, Capacities and What to Expect

Running a night shift or an outdoor event after dark? Compare solar and diesel LED lighting towers, work out coverage areas and stay on top of WHS compliance.

Adequate site lighting isn't optional. Whether you are running a night shift on a civil project, managing an outdoor event after dark, or keeping a remote worksite operational around the clock, the right temporary lighting is a safety requirement, not an afterthought. Poor lighting slows work, creates hazards, and can put your site out of compliance with Queensland workplace health and safety requirements.

At Flexihire, we offer [lighting tower hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/lighting-equipment/lighting-towers-/) across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern NSW, including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Rockhampton, Townsville, and Cairns. Our range includes the JLG Metro LED Light Tower - a versatile, fuel-efficient unit suited to a wide range of construction and event applications. This guide covers what you need to know to select, position, and safely operate lighting towers on your site or at your event.

## Why Site Lighting Matters for Safety and Productivity

### Safety Compliance

Under Queensland's Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011, persons conducting a business or undertaking are required to ensure workplaces are adequately lit. For night-shift construction and outdoor work, this means providing artificial lighting that meets minimum illumination standards for the type of work being carried out. Insufficient lighting is an enforceable compliance issue - not just a productivity concern.

### Productivity and Operational Continuity

Adequate lighting directly affects how efficiently a night shift operates. Workers in poorly lit conditions make more errors, work more slowly, and are more likely to sustain or cause incidents. A well-lit site keeps machinery operators, ground workers, and supervisors working effectively across the full shift and allows project schedules to run without weather or daylight dependency.

## Solar vs Diesel LED Lighting Towers

The two primary options for temporary site lighting are solar-powered LED towers and diesel-powered LED towers. Both offer significant advantages over older metal halide technology in terms of light quality, energy efficiency, and startup time - but each suits different site conditions.

### Solar LED Lighting Towers

Solar lighting towers use photovoltaic panels to charge an onboard battery bank during daylight hours, then draw from that stored energy to power LED floodlights after dark. They produce no emissions, generate no engine noise, and eliminate fuel costs entirely over the hire period.

Solar towers are best suited to:

- Sites with good daylight exposure during charging hours
- Applications where noise is a concern - residential areas, event venues, or noise-sensitive environments
- Remote sites where diesel resupply is difficult or expensive
- Lower-illumination requirements where battery capacity sustains required output through the full overnight period

The key limitation of [solar lighting towers](https://www.flexihire.com.au/lighting-equipment/solar-lighting-towers/) is their dependence on solar charging. In poor weather, shaded locations, or during the shorter daylight hours of winter, battery reserves may not sustain full overnight output. Always assess the site's solar conditions before specifying a solar-only lighting solution.

### Diesel LED Lighting Towers

Diesel lighting towers use an onboard diesel engine to generate power for LED floodlights. They run independently of any external power source, produce consistent output regardless of weather or time of year, and can operate continuously as long as the fuel tank is replenished.

Diesel towers are best suited to:

- High-output applications requiring maximum illumination across large areas
- Extended overnight or 24-hour operations
- Sites with limited solar exposure or extended periods of overcast weather
- Civil construction, mining, and heavy infrastructure projects where consistent output is non-negotiable

Flexihire's [JLG Metro LED Light Tower](https://www.flexihire.com.au/lighting-equipment/mobile-lighting-towers/light-tower-towable-led-light-duty/) is a high-output unit offering wide coverage and efficient fuel consumption relative to its output, making it a practical choice for construction sites, road projects, and large outdoor events across Queensland and Northern NSW.

## Coverage Areas and How Many Towers You Need

### Coverage per Tower

A single LED lighting tower typically illuminates an area of approximately 2,000 to 4,000 square metres, depending on mast height, head angle, and the number of floodlight heads. The JLG Metro LED Light Tower delivers coverage at the upper end of this range when positioned at full mast extension with heads correctly angled across the work area.

This estimate applies to general illumination for site access and safety. Specific task lighting for fine work such as electrical panel installation or concrete finishing may require supplementary lighting positioned closer to the work area.

**Calculating How Many Towers Your Site or Event Needs**

To estimate the number of lighting towers required:

- Calculate the total area to be illuminated in square metres (length x width)
- Divide by the coverage per tower - use 2,500 square metres as a conservative estimate for planning
- Round up to the nearest whole number
- Add one additional tower as a buffer for shadow zones around equipment and structures

For a construction site of 5,000 square metres, a minimum of three towers would be required for general site illumination. For events with defined activity zones, towers should be positioned to provide even coverage across audience, staging, and thoroughfare areas without creating glare toward performers or operators.

If you are unsure of your requirements, Flexihire's team can help calculate tower numbers based on your site dimensions and the specific work being carried out.

## Mobile Lighting Towers and Sites Without Fixed Power

One of the primary advantages of mobile lighting tower hire - whether solar or diesel - is that no connection to fixed mains power is required. This makes mobile towers the default solution for:

- Remote construction and civil sites with no grid connection
- Road and infrastructure projects where power access along the route is unavailable
- Outdoor events in parks, paddocks, or rural venues
- Emergency or rapid-deployment lighting requirements

Mobile lighting towers are trailer-mounted or skid-mounted, allowing them to be repositioned as the active work area moves along a linear project such as a pipeline, road, or drainage installation. For sites that evolve over the course of a hire period, this flexibility is a significant operational advantage.

## Night-Shift Safety Compliance in Queensland and Northern NSW

For construction and civil work in Queensland and Northern NSW, night-shift operations are subject to WHS requirements that go beyond minimum illumination levels:

- Site lighting must illuminate all areas where workers are moving or operating equipment
- Lighting must not create glare that impairs the vision of machinery operators or workers
- Towers must be positioned so they do not create shadows in active work areas
- Cables and equipment associated with lighting must be managed to prevent trip hazards

Flexihire provides instructional video resources for lighting tower operation through the Flexihire Info Hub, covering setup, mast extension, head positioning, and safe anchoring. All hirers are encouraged to review this material before setting up lighting towers on site for the first time.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between a solar and diesel lighting tower?

A solar lighting tower uses photovoltaic panels to charge batteries during the day and powers LED lights from stored energy overnight - no fuel costs and no engine noise. A diesel lighting tower uses an onboard engine to generate power continuously regardless of weather or daylight. Solar towers suit lower-output, noise-sensitive, or remote applications with good sun exposure. Diesel towers are better for high-output, extended-duration, or weather-dependent applications.

### How much area does a lighting tower cover?

A single LED lighting tower typically covers between 2,000 and 4,000 square metres depending on mast height, head angle, and the number of floodlight heads. For planning purposes, use 2,500 square metres per tower as a conservative estimate and add one additional tower to account for shadow zones and overlap requirements across the site.

### Do I need a permit for lighting towers at outdoor events in Queensland and Northern NSW?

Requirements vary by council, venue, and event type. Temporary lighting for short-term events often does not require a specific permit, but you should confirm with your local council and event venue before setup. For road or public space events, a Traffic Management Plan may specify lighting requirements. Flexihire's team can advise on typical setup configurations to assist with your planning.

### How do I set up a lighting tower safely?

Lighting towers must be positioned on firm, level ground and stabilised before the mast is raised. The mast should not be extended in high wind conditions. Heads should be angled to direct light across the work area without creating glare toward operators or workers. Flexihire provides instructional video resources for the lighting tower range through the Flexihire Info Hub, covering setup, mast extension, head positioning, and anchoring procedures.

Lighting Tower Hire for Construction Sites and Outdoor Events

Choosing between electric, petrol and pneumatic jackhammers? This guide breaks it down so you get the right breaker for the job.

Breaking up concrete, removing tiles or demolishing a masonry wall calls for the right breaker. Choose a machine that is too light and the job may take much longer than expected. Choose equipment that is unnecessarily large or difficult to set up and it may be impractical for the site.

The main decision is not simply electric versus pneumatic. Flexihire offers electric, petrol and air-powered jackhammers, with each option suited to different working conditions, access requirements and demolition tasks. Electric breakers are convenient where power is available, petrol models provide greater mobility, and pneumatic breakers offer a range of light-, medium- and heavy-duty options when a suitable compressor is available.

Flexihire provides jackhammer hire across Queensland and northern NSW, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. This guide explains the differences between electric, petrol and pneumatic jackhammers and how to choose a suitable machine for your job.

## Electric, Petrol and Pneumatic Jackhammers: The Core Differences

### Electric Jackhammers

An [electric jackhammer](https://www.flexihire.com.au/tools/jackhammers-electric/), also known as an electric breaker, is powered through an electrical outlet or a suitably rated generator. Its electric motor drives an internal mechanism that delivers repeated impact force through the bit and into the material being broken.

Electric jackhammers are self-contained, so they do not require a separate compressor or air hose. Flexihire offers both medium- and heavy-duty electric breakers, as well as a medium-duty electric breaker trolley package.

Key characteristics of electric jackhammers include:

- Power source: Electrical outlet or suitably rated generator
- Portability: Easy to move, although access to power is required
- Performance: Suitable for tile removal and a range of light, medium and heavier demolition tasks, depending on the model
- Indoor suitability: No engine exhaust fumes at the point of use
- Setup: No separate compressor or air hose required

Flexihire’s Jackhammer Medium Duty Electric Breaker Trolley Package is particularly useful for tile removal and larger floor areas, where supporting the full weight of the breaker for an extended period may be tiring.

### Petrol Jackhammers

A petrol jackhammer is powered by its own internal-combustion engine. Because it does not need a power lead or separate compressor, it offers greater freedom of movement across outdoor and remote worksites.

Flexihire’s 60 lb petrol breaker is designed for heavy-duty demolition and construction tasks, including breaking concrete, asphalt and other tough materials. Its self-contained petrol engine makes it suitable for areas where electrical power is not readily available.

Key characteristics of petrol jackhammers include:

- Power source: Self-contained petrol engine
- Portability: High, with no power lead, compressor or air hose
- Performance: Suitable for concrete, asphalt, rock and heavy outdoor demolition
- Indoor suitability: Generally unsuitable for enclosed spaces because of engine exhaust
- Setup: Relatively simple, with no separate power equipment required

Petrol breakers can be a practical choice for driveways, paths, landscaping projects, roadwork and remote sites where mobility is more important than access to mains power.

### Pneumatic or Air Jackhammers

A pneumatic jackhammer is powered by compressed air supplied through a hose from a compatible compressor. Flexihire offers light-, medium- and heavy-duty air breakers, allowing the equipment to be matched to the scale and material involved in the job.

Key characteristics of pneumatic jackhammers include:

- Power source: Compressed air from a compatible compressor
- Portability: Limited by the air hose and compressor location
- Performance: Available in light-, medium- and heavy-duty options
- Indoor suitability: Depends on where and how the compressor is powered and positioned
- Setup: Requires a correctly sized compressor, hose and suitable fittings

Pneumatic breakers are commonly selected for demanding construction, excavation and demolition work. However, the compressor’s output must match the breaker’s air requirements. Flexihire can assist with selecting a compatible compressor and equipment combination.

## Which Jackhammer Is Right for Your Application?

### Indoor Work and Tile Removal

For indoor tile removal, floor preparation and renovation work, an electric jackhammer is generally the most practical option. It does not produce petrol-engine exhaust at the point of operation, requires no air compressor and is easier to manage in confined spaces than a breaker connected to a long air hose.

A medium-duty electric breaker fitted with an appropriate chisel or scraper attachment can be used to lift ceramic, porcelain or stone tiles and remove the adhesive bed underneath. For larger areas, a trolley-mounted breaker allows the operator to guide the machine across the floor rather than continually supporting its full weight.

Before starting, confirm where electrical, plumbing or other services are located beneath the floor or inside nearby walls. Dust extraction, ventilation and appropriate respiratory protection may also be required depending on the material being removed.

### Outdoor Concrete Breaking

For outdoor concrete work, the right option depends on the thickness and condition of the concrete, whether it is reinforced and what power sources are available.

A medium- or heavy-duty electric breaker may be suitable where reliable power is close to the work area. A petrol breaker is often more practical where mobility is important or the site has no convenient electrical supply. For demanding demolition or excavation work, an appropriately sized pneumatic breaker and compressor may be suitable.

Rather than choosing solely by power source, consider:

- Concrete thickness and reinforcement
- Total area or volume to be removed
- Access to electrical power
- Space for a compressor
- Hose or extension-lead management
- Ventilation and exhaust restrictions
- Distance between the equipment and work area

### Remote and Unpowered Sites

Petrol jackhammers are particularly useful on remote or undeveloped sites. Their self-contained power source allows the operator to move around without relying on a generator, extension leads or compressor hoses.

They can be used for concrete and asphalt demolition, excavation and landscaping tasks where electrical access is limited. However, petrol-powered equipment should be operated outdoors or in adequately ventilated areas and in accordance with the equipment’s operating instructions.

### Commercial and Heavy Demolition

For larger commercial, civil and construction projects, both heavy-duty electric and air-powered breakers may be appropriate. Flexihire also offers a heavy-duty 60 lb petrol breaker, giving contractors another option where a self-contained machine is more practical.

The best choice will depend on site access, available services, material hardness and the duration of the work. A pneumatic setup may suit a site that already has a compatible compressor operating other air tools, while a petrol breaker may reduce setup requirements on a dispersed or remote job.

### Medium-Duty and Heavy-Duty Jackhammers

**Medium-Duty Breakers**

Medium-duty breakers are commonly used for residential renovation, floor preparation and light commercial demolition.

Typical applications include:

- Tile and adhesive removal
- Breaking paths, pavers and lighter concrete sections
- Removing brick and blockwork
- Chiselling or chasing masonry
- General renovation and demolition work

Medium-duty equipment is generally easier to handle than a heavy breaker, particularly where the operator needs to work for an extended period or reposition the machine frequently.

Flexihire offers medium-duty electric and pneumatic breakers. The right selection depends on whether power or compressed air is available and how much impact force the material requires.

**Heavy-Duty Breakers**

Heavy-duty breakers are designed for tougher and higher-volume work, including:

- Thick or reinforced concrete
- Large concrete slabs
- Asphalt and road surfaces
- Rock and hard ground
- Structural or commercial demolition
- Excavation and civil works

Flexihire’s heavy-duty range includes electric, petrol and pneumatic options. Heavy-duty machines are larger and more physically demanding, so the work should be planned around safe handling, suitable attachments and the operator’s exposure to noise, dust and vibration.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between electric, petrol and pneumatic jackhammers?

An [electric jackhammer](https://www.flexihire.com.au/tools/jackhammers-electric/) connects to an electrical supply and requires no separate compressor. A petrol jackhammer has its own engine, making it highly mobile and useful on outdoor or remote sites. A pneumatic jackhammer uses compressed air supplied by a compatible compressor and is available in light-, medium- and heavy-duty configurations.

### Which jackhammer is best for breaking concrete?

The best option depends on the concrete thickness, reinforcement, work volume and available power source. Medium- or heavy-duty electric breakers can suit many jobs where power is available. Petrol breakers are useful where mobility or remote access matters, while pneumatic breakers can suit demanding demolition where a compatible compressor can be positioned nearby.

### Can I hire a jackhammer for tile removal?

Yes. A medium-duty electric breaker with a suitable chisel or scraper attachment is commonly used for tile removal. Flexihire’s medium-duty electric breaker trolley package can make larger floor areas easier to tackle by reducing the need to support the full weight of the breaker.

### When should I choose a petrol jackhammer?

A petrol jackhammer is a practical choice for outdoor or remote work where electricity is unavailable or extension leads would restrict movement. It can be used for concrete, asphalt, excavation and landscaping work, but should not be operated in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas.

### Do air jackhammers require a compressor?

Yes. Pneumatic jackhammers require a compatible air compressor that can provide the required pressure and airflow. Flexihire offers electric, petrol and diesel compressors and can help match the compressor to the selected air breaker.

### Do I need special training to use a jackhammer?

A formal licence is not generally required for ordinary jackhammer operation, but operators must be competent to use the equipment safely and follow the supplied instructions and site procedures. Recommended PPE typically includes safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, safety boots and respiratory protection where dust is generated. Flexihire lists equipment-specific PPE recommendations on its product pages.

Jackhammer Hire: Which is Best for Your Job?

Not sure whether you need a forklift or a telehandler? This guide breaks down when to choose a telehandler for rough terrain or elevated site work

Choosing the right forklift for your warehouse or site isn't just about load capacity. The wrong machine creates bottlenecks, causes damage, and introduces safety risks that slow the entire operation down. Whether you are moving palletised stock through a distribution centre or shifting materials across an outdoor construction site, understanding the differences between powered forklifts, capacity ratings, and when a telehandler is a better fit will save you time and money on every hire.

At Flexihire, we offer forklift hire and materials handling equipment across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern NSW, including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Rockhampton, Townsville, and Cairns. This guide is designed to help warehouse managers and site supervisors make the right call before they book.

## Forklift Capacity Ratings: What Do They Mean?

Every forklift carries a rated capacity expressed in kilograms, specifying the maximum load the machine can safely lift at a standard load centre. The load centre is the horizontal distance from the front face of the forks to the centre of gravity of the load - typically 500mm for standard pallets.

What this means in practice: a forklift rated at 2,500kg at a 500mm load centre will handle that rated weight on a standard pallet. If the load is oversized, oddly shaped, or the load centre shifts further forward due to a longer attachment or extended load, the safe working capacity drops. Always confirm actual load dimensions before hiring and check the forklift's capacity plate before operating.

For most warehouse and manufacturing applications:

Up to 1,500kg: light-duty electric or manual units suitable for standard retail pallets and light stock

1,500kg to 3,000kg: the most common warehouse range, covering the majority of distribution, manufacturing, and logistics applications

3,000kg and above: heavy industrial applications including steel, concrete products, and bulk materials

## Licensing Requirements for Forklift Operation in Queensland

In Queensland, operating a powered industrial forklift requires a High-Risk Work (HRW) Licence under the nationally consistent Work Health and Safety framework. This is a mandatory requirement regardless of whether the operator is an employee or a hirer.

The relevant licence classes include:

LF: for forklift trucks including counterbalance forklifts and reach trucks

LO: for order picker forklifts where the operator is elevated with the load

Manual hand pallet jacks and pedestrian-operated stackers that do not elevate the operator do not require a HRW licence, though operators should receive site-specific training and induction before use.

Flexihire hirers are responsible for ensuring that any powered forklift is operated by a licensed individual. If you are coordinating a hire for a team, confirm all operators hold a current, in-date HRW licence before the equipment arrives on site.

## When to Choose a Telehandler Over a Forklift for Outdoor Use

[Hiring a Telehandler in Brisbane](https://www.flexihire.com.au/materials-handling-equipment/telehandlers/) is increasingly common for construction sites, civil works, and rural applications where a standard counterbalance forklift is not the right fit.

A telehandler (also called a telescopic handler) uses an extending boom to lift and position loads rather than the fixed mast of a standard forklift. This gives the telehandler several clear advantages for outdoor and site-based applications:

**Reach:** the boom extends horizontally to place loads over obstacles such as scaffolding, walls, or trenches that a forklift cannot navigate around

**Rough terrain:** four-wheel drive and high ground clearance suit outdoor site conditions where a warehouse forklift would be at risk

**Height:** boom extensions allow elevated placement well beyond what a standard forklift mast can achieve

**Versatility:** telehandlers accept pallet forks, buckets, jibs, and work platforms, making them a multi-function site tool

A telehandler is typically the better choice when:

The site involves rough or uneven terrain

Materials need to be placed onto elevated structures such as roof trusses, scaffolding decks, or elevated slabs

A single machine needs to serve multiple lifting and positioning functions across the day

The application is rural or agricultural

A standard forklift remains the right choice for smooth-surface; high-cycle warehouse operations where precise mast height control and throughput are priorities.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What type of forklift is best for warehouse use?

For most warehouse applications, a powered counterbalance forklift is the preferred choice. Electric models produce no exhaust fumes, operate quietly, and suit high-cycle environments with smooth floor surfaces. For low-frequency, ground-level pallet movement, a manual pallet jack may be sufficient and more cost-effective.

### Do you need a licence to operate a forklift in Queensland?

Yes. Operating a powered forklift in Queensland requires a High Risk Work (HRW) Licence. The most common class is LF, covering counterbalance forklifts and reach trucks. Manual hand pallet jacks that do not elevate the operator do not require a HRW licence, but operators should still receive appropriate site training.

### What is the difference between a forklift and a telehandler?

A forklift uses a fixed vertical mast to raise and lower loads directly in front of the machine. A telehandler uses a telescoping boom that extends upward and forward, allowing loads to be placed at height or over obstacles. Telehandlers are designed for rough terrain and outdoor site use, while counterbalance forklifts suit smooth-surface warehouse and distribution environments.

### What capacity forklift do I need for my site?

Capacity selection should be based on the weight of your heaviest load at its actual load centre. Most warehouse operations fall within the 1,500kg to 3,000kg range. For oversized or unusual loads, confirm exact dimensions with us before booking to ensure the specified machine can safely handle the task.

Need Portable Buildings for Hire? Here’s What to Know Before You Book

Whether you want to reclaim your yard space, eliminate a tripping hazard, or prep the area for replanting, stump grinder hire is the fastest and most cost-effective way to get the job done.

So you've had a tree removed - great. But now you're left staring at that stubborn stump sitting in your lawn, and it's not going anywhere on its own. Whether you want to reclaim your yard space, eliminate a tripping hazard, or prep the area for replanting, stump grinder hire is the fastest and most cost-effective way to get the job done.

The good news? You don't need to be a professional to operate one. With the right safety gear, a bit of preparation, and this step-by-step guide, most homeowners can tackle stump removal in a single afternoon.

## What Is a Stump Grinder?

A stump grinder is a powerful machine fitted with a rotating cutting wheel embedded with carbide teeth. It chips away at the wood, grinding the stump down below the surface of the soil - typically 100-300mm deep depending on your requirements.

Stump grinders come in various sizes, from compact manual stump grinder units suited to residential use, to large commercial machines used by landscapers and tree services. For most homeowners, a mid-range walk-behind or ride-on unit available through stump grinder rental is more than sufficient.

## Why Hire Instead of Buy?

Unless you're removing stumps regularly, purchasing a stump grinder rarely makes financial sense. Here's why stump grinder hire is the smarter choice for homeowners:

- Cost savings - Hiring costs a fraction of purchasing a machine outright.
- No storage required - Stump grinders are bulky. Hire one, use it, return it.
- Access to the right size - Hire companies offer multiple sizes to match your stump.
- Maintained equipment - You get a well-serviced machine without the maintenance hassle.

## Step-by-Step: How to Use a Hired Stump Grinder

### Step 1 - Prepare the Area

Before you start the machine, clear the area around the stump. Remove any rocks, debris, or large roots that could catch the cutting wheel. Check for underground utilities - dial 1100 (Dial Before You Dig) if you're unsure about underground lines.

### Step 2 - Put On Your Safety Gear

Stump grinding throws wood chips and debris at high speed. Proper safety gear is non-negotiable:

- Safety glasses or a full face shield
- Hearing protection
- Heavy-duty work gloves
- Steel-capped boots
- Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt

Keep bystanders - especially children and pets - well clear of the work area at all times.

### Step 3 - Cut Down the Stump

If the stump is tall, use a chainsaw to cut it as close to ground level as possible before grinding. This reduces grinding time and wear on the machine.

### Step 4 - Begin Grinding

Position the cutting wheel just above the stump and engage the machine. Move the wheel from side to side in a slow, sweeping motion, working from the outer edge inward. Lower the wheel a few centimetres with each pass. For thorough stump removal, grind to a depth of at least 150-200mm below ground level.

### Step 5 - Consider Root Depth

Root depth matters if you're planning to replant in the same spot or lay turf. Larger trees have deep lateral roots that may need additional grinding. Discuss root depth requirements with your local hire branch when booking - they can advise on the right machine depth capacity for your job.

### Step 6 - Clean Up and Chip Disposal

Once grinding is complete, you'll be left with a mound of wood chips. These can be:

- Used as garden mulch around plants and trees
- Mixed into the soil as a filler for the hole
- Bagged and disposed of through your local green waste service

Chip disposal is simple - but factor it into your planning before you start.

## Manual Stump Grinder vs Powered Machine: Which Do You Need?

A manual stump grinder uses a hand-operated cutting blade to chip away at the stump. It's slower and requires significant physical effort, but works well for small stumps in tight spaces where a powered machine can't easily fit.

For most homeowners dealing with a standard-sized tree stump, a powered walk-behind stump grinder from a hire company will save time and effort. If you have multiple stumps or a large diameter stump (300mm+), consider upgrading to a larger self-propelled or ride-on unit.

## How Much Does Stump Grinder Hire Cost?

The cost of stump grinder rental varies depending on the size and type of machine, as well as the hire duration - half-day, full day, or weekly. Smaller residential units are the most affordable option, while larger commercial-grade machines cost more per day.

The best way to get an accurate price is to contact your local Flexihire branch. Our team can recommend the right machine for your stump size and provide a transparent hire quote.

## Tips for a Smooth Hire Experience

- Book in advance, especially during spring and autumn when demand is high.
- Note the stump diameter and species - hardwood stumps take longer to grind.
- Check access - can the machine fit through your gate or along the side of your house?
- Ask about delivery and pickup options if you don't have a trailer.
- Return the machine clean - most hire companies expect equipment back in reasonable condition.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How long does it take to grind a stump?

Most average-sized residential stumps can be ground down in 1-2 hours. Larger hardwood stumps or those with extensive root systems may take half a day, especially if you need to grind deeper for replanting.

### Do I need a licence or experience to hire a stump grinder?

No licence is required for residential stump grinder hire in Queensland. Most hire companies will give you a quick operational briefing when you pick up the machine. If you're unsure, ask your local Flexihire branch for a rundown before you start.

### How deep should I grind a stump?

For general removal, grinding 150-200mm below ground level is sufficient. If you're planning to lay turf or replant a tree in the same spot, aim for 250-300mm to ensure there's enough clean soil depth for healthy root growth.

### Can I grind a stump myself or should I hire a professional?

For most standard residential stumps, DIY [stump grinder hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/landscaping-gardening-equipment/stump-grinders/) is a practical and cost-effective option. However, if the stump is very large (500mm+ diameter), located near underground utilities, or surrounded by hardscaping, it may be worth consulting a professional arborist first.

### What do I do with the hole left after stump grinding?

Fill the hole with the wood chip mixture left behind, then top it with quality topsoil. Tamp it down firmly as the chips will break down and compress over time. If replanting, use fresh soil rather than wood chips to give roots the best start.

Stump Grinder Hire: A Step-by-Step Guide for Homeowners

Tip trucks are commonly used on construction sites, landscaping projects, earthmoving operations, and civil works for the efficient transportation of bulk materials.

When you need to move large volumes of soil, gravel, sand, demolition waste, or landscaping materials around a job site or between locations, tip truck hire is one of the most efficient and cost-effective solutions available. Also known as tippers, tip trucks are purpose-built for fast loading and hydraulic unloading of bulk materials - saving time, reducing manual labour, and keeping your project moving.

Flexihire offers tip truck hire in Brisbane and across Queensland from 18 branches throughout the state and Northern-NSW. This guide covers the Flexihire tipper range, what materials they handle, licence requirements, how to use them safely, and how to get an instant quote and book.

## What Is a Tip Truck?

A tip truck - also called a tipper or dump truck - is a vehicle fitted with a hydraulically operated tipping tray that can be raised at the rear to discharge its load. The operator controls the tipping mechanism from the cab, allowing rapid and precise unloading without manual shovelling or offloading.

Tip trucks are commonly used on construction sites, landscaping projects, earthmoving operations, and civil works for the efficient transportation of bulk materials. Flexihire's range of Isuzu tip trucks are well-maintained, easy to operate, and available for both short-term daily hire and extended project contracts.

## Flexihire Tip Truck Range: Payload Sizes

Flexihire stocks a range of tip truck sizes to match different load volumes and project requirements. Choosing the right size ensures you are not making unnecessary trips or paying for more truck than your job requires.

### 1.25 Tonne Payload Tip Truck

The 1.25 tonne tip truck is the most compact and manoeuvrable option in the Flexihire range. It is suitable for smaller loads and jobs in residential or urban areas where tight access is a factor. Common applications include garden and landscaping clean-ups, small earthmoving jobs, and light demolition waste removal. This truck can typically be operated on a standard car licence, making it accessible for a wider range of hirers.

### 2 Tonne Payload Tip Truck (Isuzu NPR200)

The 2 tonne Isuzu NPR200 tip truck offers a balance of payload capacity and manoeuvrability, making it suitable for a wide range of construction, landscaping, and earthmoving tasks. It handles materials including soil, aggregate, sand, mulch, gravel, and rubble efficiently and is a common choice for small to mid-size site work across Brisbane and surrounding areas. Flexihire provides full documentation for the Isuzu NPR200 through its Info Hub, including the manufacturer's manual, safe operating procedures, and risk assessment.

### 5 Tonne Payload Tip Truck

The 5 tonne tip truck is Flexihire's heavy-duty option, designed for larger volumes of material and more demanding site conditions. Its greater payload capacity means fewer trips per job, improving overall site efficiency on larger construction, civil, and earthmoving projects. This model is the preferred choice for major construction projects, road works, bulk landscaping contracts, and any application requiring the regular movement of large material volumes.

## What Materials Can a Tip Truck Move?

Flexihire tip trucks are designed to handle a broad range of bulk materials commonly encountered on construction, landscaping, and earthmoving sites in Queensland. Materials regularly transported by hired tippers include:

- Soil and fill material from excavation and earthmoving
- Sand, gravel, and aggregate for construction and landscaping
- Mulch, turf, and organic material for garden and landscaping projects
- Demolition rubble, concrete, and brickwork waste
- Road base and compacted fill material for civil works
- General site waste and clean-up material

It is important that materials are within the rated payload of the truck and that loads are evenly distributed and secured where required. Flexihire's team can advise on appropriate load volumes when you book.

## Tip Truck vs Compaction Equipment: Understanding the Difference

A common point of confusion when planning earthmoving and site preparation projects is understanding the difference between tip trucks and compaction equipment such as plate compactors and rammers - and when you need both.

### What a Tip Truck Does

A tip truck transports bulk material to and from a site and deposits it in a designated location via the hydraulic tipping mechanism. It is a haulage tool - its role is moving material efficiently, not processing or compacting it.

### What a Plate Compactor or Rammer Does

A plate compactor or rammer is used after material has been delivered and spread to compact it to the required density. Compaction is essential for road bases, paving sub-bases, backfill around footings and pipes, and any application where the ground must be stable and load-bearing. Without proper compaction, fill material will continue to settle over time, causing subsidence, cracking, and structural failure.

### How Many Passes Does Compaction Equipment Need?

The number of passes required depends on the material type, layer thickness, and the compaction equipment being used. As a general guide:

- Granular material such as road base or gravel: typically 4 to 6 passes per 150mm layer
- Cohesive material such as clay or mixed fill: typically 6 to 8 passes per 150mm layer
- Sand: typically 3 to 4 passes per layer, as it compacts more readily

Flexihire stocks both plate compactors and rammers for hire alongside its tip truck range. If your project involves delivering and then compacting fill material, Flexihire's team can assist you in selecting the right combination of equipment.

## What Licence Do You Need to Drive a Tip Truck in QLD?

Licence requirements for tip truck hire in Queensland depend on the size and weight of the vehicle you are operating. It is the hirer's responsibility to hold the appropriate licence class before taking control of any hired vehicle.

### Light Vehicles: Standard Car Licence

Smaller tip trucks with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) at or below 4.5 tonnes may be operated on a standard Queensland car licence (Class C). This applies to compact models suitable for light residential and landscaping applications.

### Medium to Heavy Vehicles: MR or HR Licence

Larger tip trucks with a GVM above 4.5 tonnes require a higher licence class. Vehicles between 4.5 and 8 tonnes GVM require at least a Medium Rigid (MR) licence. Vehicles above 8 tonnes require a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence at minimum. Flexihire staff will confirm the specific licence requirement for the truck you are hiring at the time of booking.

## Tip Truck Safety: What to Know Before You Drive

Tip trucks are straightforward to operate but involve specific safety considerations that all hirers should be aware of before use.

### 1. Always Lower the Tray Before Driving

The most critical safety rule for tip truck operation is to ensure the tipping bed is fully lowered before moving the vehicle. Driving with the tray raised is extremely dangerous and can cause the vehicle to overturn or strike overhead hazards including powerlines and structures.

### 2. Do Not Exceed the Rated Payload

Overloading a tip truck affects braking performance, vehicle handling, and stability - particularly when tipping on uneven ground. Always confirm the weight of your load and ensure it is within the truck's rated capacity before driving.

### 3. Check Overhead Clearances Before Tipping

Before raising the tipping bed, check for overhead power lines, tree branches, building structures, and other hazards above the tipping zone. Tipping near overhead obstacles is a leading cause of serious incidents involving tip trucks.

### 4. Tip on Stable, Level Ground Only

Never tip on soft, uneven, or sloped ground without first confirming the ground is capable of supporting the vehicle and load safely. Unstable ground during tipping significantly increases the risk of vehicle rollover.

## Common Applications: Construction, Landscaping, and Earthmoving

Tip trucks are used across a wide range of project types throughout Brisbane and regional Queensland.

### Construction and Civil Works

On construction sites, tip trucks are used to remove excavated material, transport fill, deliver aggregate and road base, and clear demolition waste. The 5 tonne model is commonly specified for larger construction contracts, while the 2 tonne Isuzu suits smaller builds and site clean-ups.

### Landscaping and Garden Projects

Landscaping contractors and homeowners use tip trucks to deliver and position bulk materials including soil, sand, mulch, gravel, and turf. The compact 1.25 tonne model is well-suited to residential landscaping where site access is tight, while larger models support commercial landscape contracts requiring multiple loads per day.

### Earthmoving and Site Preparation

During site preparation, excavation, and cut-and-fill operations, tip trucks work alongside excavators and loaders to move large volumes of material efficiently. Pairing a hired tip truck with a Flexihire mini excavator or skid steer loader is a common approach for smaller earthmoving jobs where a full earthmoving contractor is not required.

Tip Truck Hire Brisbane: What to Expect and How to Book

This cherry picker guide covers everything you need to know - from choosing the right model to understanding licence requirements and how to book.

Whether you need to trim a large tree, clean gutters on a two-storey home, install a sign above a shopfront, or carry out maintenance on a tall building, cherry picker hire gives you safe, stable access to height without the limitations of ladders or scaffolding. Compact, trailer-mounted, and easy to tow behind most vehicles, cherry pickers are one of the most versatile access solutions available for hire across Queensland and Northern- NSW.

At Flexihire, we offer cherry picker hire at 18 branch locations throughout Greater Brisbane, Queensland, and Northern- NSW. This guide covers everything you need to know - from choosing the right model to understanding licence requirements and how to book.

## What Is a Cherry Picker?

A cherry picker is a type of trailer-mounted boom lift that is towed to site by a standard vehicle and set up using hydraulic outriggers for stability. Once positioned and levelled, the operator is raised to the required working height in a safety basket attached to the end of an articulated or telescopic boom arm.

Cherry pickers are also referred to as trailer-mounted booms or elevated work platforms. Because they are towed rather than self-propelled, they are more compact and accessible than many other boom lifts - making them a popular choice for residential, commercial, and light industrial jobs where access to the site is limited.

## What Can You Use a Cherry Picker For?

Cherry pickers are used across a wide range of trades and project types in Queensland and Northern-NSW. The most common applications include the following.

### Tree Trimming and Lopping

Arborists and homeowners use cherry pickers to access tree canopies safely when the height or spread of a tree makes ground-level work impractical. A cherry picker provides a stable working platform that allows the operator to position tools accurately and work without the fatigue and balance issues associated with climbing or extended ladder use. For most residential trees, the 10.5m cherry picker provides sufficient reach. Larger trees or those with significant spread may require the 15m model.

### Gutter Cleaning and Roof Maintenance

Gutters on two-storey homes and commercial buildings are among the most common reasons people book cherry picker hire across Queensland and Northern-NSW. The platform provides a secure, hands-free working position at gutter height, allowing the operator to clear debris, inspect the gutter line, and carry out minor repairs with both hands free. The 10.5m cherry picker suits most residential gutter work. For taller commercial buildings, the 15m model provides additional reach.

### Signage Installation and Maintenance

Tradespeople and sign installers regularly use cherry pickers to install, replace, or maintain signage on commercial buildings, shopfronts, and industrial facilities. The adjustable platform allows the operator to work at the exact height and position required, reducing the time spent repositioning and improving precision on the job.

### Building Maintenance and Painting

Cherry pickers are a cost-effective alternative to scaffolding for light maintenance and painting work on external building facades, soffits, fascias, and eaves. For smaller jobs where the setup and takedown time of scaffolding is not justified, a hired cherry picker allows a single operator or small crew to work efficiently and safely at height.

## The Hidden Risks of Working at Height Without the Right Equipment

Working at height is one of the leading causes of serious workplace injury in Australia. Using the wrong access equipment - or improvising with ladders on uneven ground - significantly increases the risk of falls, equipment instability, and dropped tools or materials. Cherry pickers address these risks directly by providing:

### 1. A Stable, Enclosed Working Platform

Unlike ladders, which rely entirely on the operator's balance and the stability of the surface they are placed on, a cherry picker basket is a fixed, enclosed platform. Outriggers are deployed before the platform is raised, providing a stable base regardless of minor ground irregularities.

### 2. Both Hands Free for the Task

Ladder work requires at least one hand to maintain contact with the ladder at all times, limiting what the operator can carry and how they can use their tools. A cherry picker basket allows the operator to use both hands freely, improving both productivity and safety.

### 3. Controlled Height and Positioning

Cherry pickers can be raised, lowered, and repositioned with precision using hydraulic controls. This eliminates the need to repeatedly reposition ladders or scaffolding to access different points along a wall, roofline, or tree canopy - saving time and reducing the number of times the operator has to ascend and descend.

## Flexihire Cherry Picker Models: 10.5m and 15m

Flexihire's cherry picker hire range includes two trailer-mounted models suited to different working heights and job requirements.

### Cherry Picker 10.5m

The 10.5m cherry picker is the most commonly hired model and suits the majority of residential and light commercial applications. It is compact enough to be towed to most suburban sites and set up quickly using hydraulic outriggers. This model is ideal for gutter cleaning on two-storey homes, residential tree trimming, shopfront signage installation, and light external maintenance work on single and double-storey commercial buildings.

### Cherry Picker 15m

The 15m cherry picker provides extended reach for tasks requiring access to greater heights. With a working height of 15 metres, it is well suited to commercial building maintenance, taller trees, and elevated signage or lighting work on multi-storey structures. This model is ideal for commercial building facade maintenance, tall tree lopping and canopy work, and installation and servicing of elevated signs and lighting.

## Cherry Picker Licence Requirements in QLD

Licence requirements in Queensland are based on the working height of the cherry picker you intend to hire. Understanding these requirements before booking is important.

### Under 11 Metres: No Licence Required

Cherry pickers with a maximum working height below 11 metres do not require a formal licence to operate in Queensland. The Flexihire 10.5m model falls into this category. However, operation still involves working at height, which is a high-risk activity. Flexihire requires all hirers to confirm that the operator is competent for the task and all safety requirements outlined in the hire agreement are met. All operators must wear a full-body safety harness and ensure outriggers are correctly deployed before operating the platform.

### 11 Metres and Above: High Risk Work Licence Required

Any elevated work platform with a boom-type mechanism and a working height of 11 metres or more requires the operator to hold a valid High Risk Work (HRW) licence under Queensland workplace health and safety legislation. The relevant licence class is the BF (Boom Type Elevating Work Platform) endorsement. The Flexihire 15m cherry picker falls into this category. Flexihire staff can confirm the relevant documentation requirements when you make your booking.

## Cherry Picker Safety Requirements

Regardless of which model you hire, the following safety requirements apply to all cherry picker hire agreements at Flexihire.

- The operator must wear a full-body safety harness attached to the anchor point in the basket at all times while the platform is elevated.
- Outriggers must be fully deployed and the machine properly levelled on stable ground before the platform is raised.
- The operator must not exceed the rated platform capacity.
- Cherry pickers must not be operated in wind speeds exceeding the manufacturer's rated limit.
- The hirer is responsible for ensuring the operator is competent for the task and familiar with the machine's controls before use.
- Safe operating procedures, risk assessments, and technical documentation are available through Flexihire's Info Hub for all hire equipment.

Flexihire's cherry picker equipment is fitted with emergency stop buttons, non-slip platform surfaces, safety harness attachment points, and hydraulic outriggers for stability.

Cherry Picker Hire: Uses, Safety and How to Book in QLD

When it comes to boom lift hire, choosing between a knuckle boom and a straight boom can make a real difference to how efficiently and safely your job gets done.

When it comes to boom lift hire, choosing between a knuckle boom and a straight boom can make a real difference to how efficiently and safely your job gets done. Both lift types are widely used across construction, maintenance, and painting industries in Queensland and Northern-NSW, but they are designed for different applications. Understanding the key differences helps you select the right machine from the start, avoid delays on site, and keep your hire costs under control.

At Flexihire, we supply a range of boom lifts from 32ft to 150ft, including electric and diesel models, to support projects of all sizes across Queensland and Northern- NSW. Whether you are working on roofing, facade painting, or facility maintenance, this guide will help you find the right lift for your project.

## What Is a Boom Lift?

A boom lift is a type of aerial work platform that uses an extendable arm to raise workers and equipment to elevated positions. Unlike scissor lifts, which move directly upward, boom lifts can reach outward as well as upward, giving operators greater flexibility in positioning.

Boom lifts are also commonly called cherry pickers and are used across a wide range of industries, including construction, civil infrastructure, painting, electrical work, and building maintenance. They are available in a range of heights, power sources, and configurations to suit different site conditions and access requirements.

## Knuckle Boom vs Straight Boom: The Key Differences

The two most common types of boom lift are the knuckle boom (articulated boom) and the straight boom (telescopic boom). Each has distinct advantages depending on the nature of your project.

### Knuckle Boom Lifts (Articulated Boom Lifts)

A knuckle boom lift features multiple jointed sections that allow the arm to bend and flex around obstacles. This makes it highly versatile for sites where access is restricted or where workers need to reach over, under, or around structures.

Knuckle boom hire is particularly well suited to:

- Confined or cluttered work sites
- Jobs requiring access over rooflines, parapets, or building features
- Sites where frequent repositioning is needed throughout the day
- Interior work where tight turning circles are essential
- Projects in urban environments with limited setup space

### Straight Boom Lifts (Telescopic Boom Lifts)

A straight boom lift extends in a single, direct line outward and upward. These machines are designed for maximum horizontal reach and are most effective when working at height across open, unobstructed areas.

Straight boom lifts are commonly used for:

- Open construction sites with clear overhead access
- High-reach tasks requiring maximum horizontal outreach
- Large-scale facade work, bridge inspections, and industrial maintenance
- Projects where working height is the primary consideration
- Outdoor applications where ground conditions are stable and level

## Boom Lift Height Ranges: 32ft to 150ft

One of the most important factors when arranging boom lift hire is selecting the correct working height. Flexihire's fleet covers a broad range, from compact low-level lifts through to high-reach machines suited to large-scale industrial and commercial projects.

### 32ft to 45ft: Low-to-Mid Level Access

Lifts in this range are well suited to single and double-storey residential and commercial work. They are compact and easy to manoeuvre on smaller sites. Common applications include roofing and gutter maintenance, painting and surface preparation on lower buildings, and shopfront or awning maintenance.

Electric models are widely available in this range, making them suitable for indoor applications as well.

### 50ft to 80ft: Mid-Range Commercial and Industrial Work

This range covers most commercial and industrial maintenance applications, including facade work on three to six-storey buildings, large-scale painting contracts, and maintenance on industrial plant and infrastructure. Knuckle boom models in this range offer excellent articulation for complex access scenarios.

### 85ft to 150ft: High-Reach Industrial and Infrastructure

At the upper end of the range, straight boom lifts dominate. These machines are used for major construction projects, high-rise maintenance, infrastructure inspection, and large industrial facilities. Diesel-powered units are the standard choice at these heights due to their power output and runtime.

Flexihire's project capability team can assist with long-term hire arrangements for high-reach machines across Queensland and Northern- NSW.

## Electric vs Diesel Boom Lifts: Which Option Suits Your Site?

Choosing between an electric and diesel boom lift depends on where and how the machine will be used. Each power source has clear advantages for specific environments.

### Electric Boom Lifts

Electric boom lifts run on rechargeable battery packs and produce no direct emissions during operation. They are the preferred option for indoor environments and sites with strict air quality or noise requirements.

Electric boom lifts are recommended when:

- Working indoors in warehouses, shopping centres, schools, or hospitals
- Operating in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces
- Noise restrictions apply, such as in occupied commercial buildings
- Environmental or site requirements limit the use of fuel-powered equipment
- Daily shift durations are within battery range

### Diesel Boom Lifts

Diesel boom lifts deliver greater power and longer continuous runtime, making them the standard choice for outdoor construction and industrial maintenance. Many diesel models also feature four-wheel drive capability for rough terrain.

Diesel boom lifts are the better choice when:

- Working outdoors on construction sites, commercial builds, or open infrastructure
- The terrain is uneven or requires four-wheel drive
- Extended shift lengths make recharging impractical
- Higher working heights above 60ft require more power
- The site is remote and electrical charging is not available

## Boom Lift Hire for Roofing, Painting, and Maintenance

Boom lifts are used across a wide range of trades and project types. The following outlines how different industries commonly apply boom lift hire across Queensland and Northern- NSW.

### Roofing

Roofing contractors use boom lifts to access rooflines, ridges, gutters, and parapet walls on commercial and industrial buildings where ladders or scaffolding are not practical. The ability to position the platform precisely and move it quickly between access points makes boom lifts a productive choice for roofing work.

For most residential and low-rise commercial roofing, 32ft to 45ft boom lifts are appropriate. Industrial shed roofing and re-sheeting typically requires 60ft to 80ft machines. Knuckle boom models are particularly useful for reaching over eaves and roof edges where direct access is restricted.

### Painting and Facade Work

Painting contractors favour boom lifts over scaffolding on many jobs because they allow fast repositioning across large surfaces without the setup and takedown time associated with traditional scaffolding systems. This can reduce total project time and associated labour costs.

Knuckle boom lifts are well suited to facades with complex features such as balconies, overhangs, and architectural details. Straight boom lifts are effective for open, flat facades where wide horizontal coverage is the priority. Electric models are preferred for interior painting in commercial and industrial spaces, while diesel machines handle most outdoor facade contracts.

### Building and Facility Maintenance

Maintenance teams rely on boom lifts for a wide range of tasks, including HVAC servicing, lighting replacement, signage installation, structural inspections, and general upkeep of building assets. The ability to position the platform precisely without repeated ladder repositioning improves safety and efficiency.

Electric articulated boom lifts are particularly suited to indoor facility maintenance, where quiet operation and zero emissions are important. Their ability to navigate around ductwork, racking, and overhead equipment makes them a practical option for complex interior environments.

## How to Select the Right Boom Lift

To identify the most suitable machine for your project, consider the following:

- What is the maximum working height required? Select a machine with a platform height that comfortably exceeds your highest point of work.
- Is the site indoors or outdoors? Indoor applications typically call for electric models. Outdoor sites generally require diesel.
- Is overhead or lateral access restricted? If the site has obstacles, a knuckle boom is likely the better choice. Open sites with clear access suit straight boom machines.
- How long are your daily shifts? Electric lifts are well suited to standard shifts where recharging overnight is possible. Diesel is better for extended hours or remote sites.
- What is the ground condition? Rough or uneven terrain may require a four-wheel drive diesel model.
- How long is the hire period? Flexihire offers daily, weekly, and long-term hire options to suit both short project needs and extended contracts.

Boom Lift Hire: Knuckle Boom vs Straight Boom - What's the Difference?

Plate compactor hire gives you access to the right machine to do the job properly, without the cost of ownership.

Poor compaction is one of the most common - and most avoidable - causes of pavement failure, path subsidence, and paver movement. Whether you are laying a driveway, preparing a footing sub-base, backfilling a trench, or setting a paved outdoor area, compaction is what separates a finished surface that holds for decades from one that cracks and sinks within a season. Plate compactor hire gives you access to the right machine to do the job properly, without the cost of ownership.

Flexihire supplies plate compactors and rammers for hire across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern- NSW, covering everything from residential paving projects and landscaping jobs to civil and construction applications requiring consistent, measurable compaction. This guide explains how plate compactors work, when to use one versus a rammer, how many passes each material type needs, and how to compact correctly from preparation through to finish.

## What Is a Plate Compactor and How Does It Work?

A plate compactor - also called a wacker packer or vibrating plate compactor - consists of a heavy steel base plate connected to an engine-driven eccentric weight assembly. As the engine runs, the eccentric weight rotates at high speed, generating rapid vertical vibrations that are transmitted through the plate into the material below.

These vibrations cause the particles in granular materials such as sand, gravel, and road base to rearrange and settle into a tighter, more stable configuration. The result is a denser, more load-bearing surface that resists movement, settlement, and water infiltration.

Plate compactors are ideal for working with granular, free-draining soils and base materials. They are not effective on cohesive soils such as clay - for those materials, a rammer is required.

## Plate Compactor vs Rammer: Which Do You Need?

Plate compactors and rammers are both compaction tools, but they are designed for different materials and different site conditions. Selecting the wrong machine produces inadequate compaction regardless of how many passes you make - whether you’re looking at compaction equipment rental for a full sub-base job or a single-day rammer hire for trench backfill, starting with the right tool is what determines the result.

### Plate Compactor

A plate compactor uses a large, wide base plate to apply vibration-assisted compaction force across a broad surface area. The wide plate distributes the machine's weight evenly, making it effective for:

- Compacting road base, crusher dust, and gravel for driveways and paths
- Preparing sub-bases for paving, concrete, and tiled surfaces
- Compacting sand bedding layers beneath pavers
- Seating newly laid pavers into their bedding course
- Compacting backfill in open trenches wider than approximately 600mm

Plate compactors are available in single-direction and reversible configurations. Reversible plate compactors can travel both forward and backward under power, making them more efficient for working in confined areas and along edges. Flexihire's team can advise on which configuration suits your job.

### Rammer (Jumping Jack / Trench Rammer)

A rammer uses a small, concentrated impact foot that strikes the ground in rapid succession at high force. Unlike the broad compaction footprint of a plate compactor, a rammer concentrates its force into a small area, driving compaction energy deep into the material below. This makes it highly effective for:

- Compacting cohesive soils such as clay and silty fill in trenches
- Backfilling around pipe and conduit trenches where plate compactors cannot reach
- Compacting fill in footings, strip foundations, and retaining wall bases
- Any application requiring deep compaction in a narrow or confined space

Attempting to use a plate compactor on clay or cohesive soils is ineffective - the vibration does not cause particle rearrangement in cohesive materials the way it does in granular ones. If your job involves clay backfill or trench compaction, hire a rammer. Flexihire stocks both and can advise on the right choice based on your material and site - browse the full [plate compactor hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/compaction-equipment/plate-compactors/) range to compare options before you book.

## How Many Passes Does Each Material Need?

The number of compactor passes required to achieve adequate compaction depends on the material type, the layer thickness, and the machine being used. As a general guide for plate compactor hire:

### Road Base and Crusher Dust

Road base and crusher dust are the most commonly compacted materials for residential and commercial paving sub-bases and driveways. These angular, well-graded granular materials compact efficiently under vibration. Compact in layers no deeper than 150mm (uncompacted depth) and apply 4 to 6 passes per layer. Each pass should overlap the previous one by approximately one-third of the plate width to ensure even coverage.

### Gravel and Aggregate

Clean, single-sized gravel is less efficient to compact than well-graded road base due to the uniform particle size, which limits the degree of interlocking that can be achieved. Allow 5 to 7 passes per 100mm to 150mm layer. Wetting gravel lightly before compaction can improve the result by reducing particle bounce during vibration.

### Sand

Sand compacts readily under vibration and generally requires only 3 to 4 passes per layer. It is the standard bedding material for interlocking paving. For paver bedding applications, apply a final compaction pass over the laid pavers using the plate compactor fitted with a rubber pad to seat the pavers and close joint gaps.

### General Fill and Mixed Soils

Mixed fill material containing some clay or organic content should be treated with caution. If the fill is predominantly granular, a plate compactor with 5 to 6 passes per 150mm layer is appropriate. If the material is predominantly cohesive or contains significant clay, switch to a rammer. If you are unsure of your fill material's classification, contact Flexihire for advice before hiring.

## Layer Depth: The Most Common Compaction Mistake

Attempting to compact deep fill in a single pass is the single most common compaction mistake made by both DIYers and experienced operators. A plate compactor can only compact to a limited depth per pass - typically 150mm to 200mm depending on the machine's output force. Material below that depth remains uncompacted regardless of how many passes are made.

The correct approach is to compact in layers. Fill to a depth of 150mm, compact to the required specification, then add the next 150mm layer and compact again. This process takes longer but produces consistent compaction throughout the full depth of fill - which is the only way to prevent settlement and surface failure over time.

## How to Use a Plate Compactor: Key Technique Points

### 1. Check the Surface Before You Start

Ensure the area to be compacted is free of large stones, timber, roots, and debris that could prevent uniform compaction or damage the base plate. Wet or waterlogged material should be allowed to drain before compaction - overly saturated granular material does not compact effectively.

### 2. Overlap Each Pass

Move the plate compactor in straight, parallel passes across the surface. Each pass should overlap the previous one by approximately one-third of the plate width. This ensures the entire surface receives consistent compaction coverage and avoids uncompacted strips between passes.

### 3. Work in a Grid Pattern on Large Areas

For large flat areas such as driveways and sub-bases, first compact in one direction (north to south), then make a second set of passes at 90 degrees (east to west). This cross-pattern approach ensures even compaction in both directions and is particularly important for load-bearing applications.

### 4. Use a Rubber Pad When Compacting Over Pavers

If running the plate compactor over the finished surface of laid pavers, always fit a rubber pad to the base plate first. The vibrating steel plate will scratch, chip, and crack paver surfaces without this protection. The rubber pad absorbs the abrasive contact while still transmitting the vibration needed to seat the pavers and close joint gaps.

### 5. Complete a Final Finishing Pass

After achieving the required compaction depth and coverage, complete a final slow pass over the entire surface. This closing pass irons out any surface irregularities and ensures a flat, even finish across the full area.

## Safety Requirements for Plate Compactor Hire

Plate compactors are physically demanding machines that generate significant vibration, noise, and movement. The following safety requirements apply to all Flexihire plate compactor hire agreements.

- Wear steel-capped boots at all times - the machine is heavy, and the base plate can cause serious foot injuries if contact is made
- Wear hearing protection - petrol-powered plate compactors produce sustained noise levels that can cause hearing damage with prolonged exposure
- Wear gloves to manage the vibration transmitted through the handlebars during extended operation
- Keep bystanders clear of the operating area
- Never operate on steep slopes where the machine could tip or run away - check manufacturer specifications for maximum operating gradient
- Follow the safe operating procedures and risk assessment available through the Flexihire Info Hub

## Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a plate compactor and a rammer?
###
A plate compactor uses a large, flat vibrating plate to compact granular materials such as gravel, road base, and sand across a wide area. A rammer uses a smaller, rapid-impact foot to compact cohesive soils such as clay in narrow areas like trenches and footings. Plate compactors suit surface compaction of granular material; rammers suit deep compaction of cohesive soils in confined spaces.

### How many passes does a plate compactor need?

As a general guide: road base and crusher dust require 4 to 6 passes per 150mm layer; gravel requires 5 to 7 passes per layer; sand requires 3 to 4 passes. Always compact in layers of no more than 150mm - never attempt to compact deep fill in a single pass.

### Can I use a plate compactor on pavers?

Yes, but a rubber pad attachment must be fitted to the base plate before running the compactor over paving. Without the rubber pad, the vibrating steel plate will scratch and crack the paver surface. Flexihire can advise on rubber pad availability when you book.

### How thick should each compaction layer be?

For most plate compactor applications, compact fill in layers no deeper than 150mm (uncompacted). Attempting to compact thicker layers results in surface compaction only, with lower material remaining loose - which leads to settlement and subsidence over time.

Plate Compactor Hire: How to Compact Soil, Gravel and Pavers Like a Pro

Wood chipper hire turns that pile into a useful resource - processing branches, prunings, and woody material into wood chip mulch that can go straight back into the garden.

After a storm, a seasonal garden clean-up, or a tree lopping session, the pile of branches left behind can quickly become a project in itself. Hauling green waste to a tip is time-consuming, expensive, and often requires multiple trips. Wood chipper hire turns that pile into a useful resource - processing branches, prunings, and woody material into wood chip mulch that can go straight back into the garden.

At Flexihire, we offer diesel wood chipper hire across Queensland and Northern-NSW, with machines capable of handling branches from light prunings up to 150mm in diameter. This guide covers how to choose the right chipper, how to operate it safely, what PPE you need, and how to make the most of the material you produce.

## Why Hire a Wood Chipper Instead of Hiring a Skip?

For most homeowners and landscaping contractors dealing with green waste, a wood chipper is a more efficient and cost-effective solution than a skip bin - particularly for larger volumes of branchy material.

- A skip bin fills quickly with bulky branches due to the air space between them. A chipper reduces the same volume of material by up to 10:1, eliminating multiple skip hire costs.
- Chipped material has immediate practical value as garden mulch. Rather than paying to dispose of green waste, you produce a usable product on site.
- A single day of wood chipper hire is sufficient to process the green waste from most residential tree trimming or storm cleanup jobs.
- For landscaping contractors managing multiple sites, a chipper allows green waste to be processed and re-used on the same property rather than transported off site.

## Flexihire Wood Chipper Range: 100mm and 150mm Diesel

Flexihire's wood chipper hire range includes diesel-powered models suited to different branch diameters and job volumes. Choosing the right size prevents overloading the machine and ensures efficient processing throughout the job.

### 100mm Diesel Wood Chipper

The 100mm diesel chipper is suited to lighter residential work - pruning clean-ups, hedge trimming waste, and branches from small to medium trees. It handles material up to 100mm in diameter and is compact enough to be manoeuvred through standard side gates and into rear gardens. It is a practical choice for homeowners and gardeners managing routine seasonal maintenance.

Best for: residential garden maintenance, pruning waste from fruit trees and garden shrubs, hedge and topiary trimmings, and light clean-up after small tree removal.

### 150mm Diesel Wood Chipper

The 150mm diesel chipper is Flexihire's heavy-duty option, designed for processing larger branches and higher volumes of material. It handles branches up to 150mm in diameter, making it suitable for arborist clean-up work, storm damage clearing, large garden renovations, and land clearing tasks where significant volumes of woody material need to be processed efficiently.

Powered by a robust diesel engine, it delivers consistent performance across extended hire periods and is built to handle the demands of commercial landscaping and tree services. The high-speed drum or blade cutting mechanism reduces large branches to uniform chip quickly and with minimal operator effort. If you’ve been searching for [wood chipper hire near me](https://www.flexihire.com.au/equipment/earthmoving-landscaping/gardening-lawn-care/woodchippers-grinders/), the 150mm diesel is the machine most hirers in Queensland reach for when the job involves anything larger than light garden prunings.

Best for: arborist and tree service clean-ups, post-storm branch removal, large property clearances, and commercial landscaping contracts generating significant green waste volumes.

## The Hidden Dangers of Wood Chipper Operation

Wood chippers are powerful machines and are among the most hazardous pieces of equipment in the landscaping and arborist industry when operated without proper precautions. Understanding the key risks before you start is essential.

### 1. Entanglement and Engulfment

The infeed chute draws material toward the cutting drum or blades at high speed. If loose clothing, long hair, gloves, or fingers come into contact with material being fed into the chute, the machine can pull the operator's hand or arm into the cutting mechanism within a fraction of a second. This is the most serious hazard associated with wood chipper operation.

Always maintain a firm grip on branches at the side rather than the end, stand to the side of the infeed chute rather than directly in front of it, and release the branch before your hands reach the infeed opening. Never attempt to push material in with your hands.

### 2. Projectile Discharge

The discharge chute expels chipped material at high velocity. Bystanders within the discharge zone can be struck by chip pieces and debris, including small stones, dirt, or embedded fragments that enter the machine along with branch material. Always direct the discharge chute away from people, vehicles, and structures, and maintain a minimum exclusion zone of 10 metres around the machine during operation.

### 3. Kickback from Jammed Material

If an oversized or incompatible material jams the cutting drum, the machine may stop suddenly or, in some cases, reverse-eject material back through the infeed chute. Never attempt to clear a jam manually while the machine is running. Switch the machine off, wait for the drum to stop completely, and follow the manufacturer's clearing procedure as outlined in Flexihire's Info Hub documentation.

## PPE Requirements for Wood Chipper Hire

The following personal protective equipment is required when operating a hired wood chipper. Flexihire's hire agreement and safe operating procedures specify these requirements as conditions of hire.

- Eye protection: safety glasses or a full face shield to protect against flying chip debris
- Hearing protection: diesel wood chippers operate at noise levels that can cause hearing damage with prolonged exposure - earmuffs or earplugs rated to the machine's noise output are required
- Gloves: cut-resistant gloves for handling branches - note that gloves must fit securely and not be loose or baggy, as loose gloves increase entanglement risk
- Steel-capped boots: protect feet from falling branches and debris
- Close-fitting clothing: loose clothing, scarves, and jewellery must not be worn during operation
- High-visibility vest: required on any active work site or roadside job
-
## How to Chip Branches Safely: Step-by-Step

Following a consistent process for each feed of material reduces the risk of incidents and keeps the machine running efficiently throughout the job.

### 1. Inspect and Prepare the Material

Before feeding, check each branch for embedded wire, nails, or metal fittings. These will damage the cutting drum and may cause dangerous projectile ejection. Remove any foreign material before chipping. Sort branches by diameter and feed smaller material first to establish a rhythm and confirm the machine is running well before processing larger pieces.

### 2. Start the Machine and Confirm Operation

Start the chipper according to the manufacturer's procedure and allow it to reach full operating RPM before feeding material. Check that the discharge chute is directed safely away from any people, vehicles, or structures and that the exclusion zone around the machine is clear.

### 3. Feed Branches Butt-End First

Always feed branches into the infeed chute butt-end (cut end) first. Feeding tip-end first allows the branch to bounce and whip during the feed process, increasing the risk of kickback and loss of control. Hold the branch at the side, not the top, and guide it into the chute without pushing - the machine's feed rollers will draw the material in automatically.

### 4. Never Overfeed

Feed material at a rate the machine can process without slowing significantly. If the engine begins to labour, stop feeding immediately and allow the drum to clear. Overfeeding is the most common cause of jams and can cause engine damage or dangerous material ejection.

### 5. Clear the Area When Stopping

Before switching the machine off, allow all material in the infeed chute to process fully. Never leave material sitting in the infeed when the machine is stopped, as restart under load can cause jamming. Switch off, confirm the drum has stopped completely, and secure the machine before leaving it unattended.

## Making the Most of Your Wood Chip

The material produced by a hired wood chipper can be put to immediate practical use in the garden, reducing the need for purchased mulch and improving soil health over time.

- Apply wood chip mulch to garden beds at a depth of 75mm to 100mm to suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, and moderate soil temperature
- Keep mulch 100mm away from the base of trees and shrubs to prevent collar rot
- Allow freshly chipped material from diseased trees to dry for several weeks before applying it to garden beds, to reduce the risk of spreading disease
- Coarse chip from larger branches is ideal for garden paths and under play equipment as a soft, permeable ground cover
- If you produce more chip than your garden can use, many councils accept wood chip donations for public parks and verge planting programs

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What size branches can a hired wood chipper handle?

Flexihire's 150mm diesel wood chipper can process branches up to 150mm in diameter. For most residential and light commercial green waste jobs, this covers the majority of branches encountered during tree trimming, lopping, and storm cleanup. The 100mm model suits lighter residential pruning and garden maintenance.

### Do I need a licence to operate a wood chipper?

No formal licence is required to operate a wood chipper in Queensland. However, operators must be competent in the safe use of the machine and must follow the safe operating procedures outlined in Flexihire's hire agreement and Info Hub documentation.

### Can I use chipped material as garden mulch?

Yes. Wood chip produced by a chipper makes excellent garden mulch. Apply to a depth of 75mm to 100mm around garden beds and trees to suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, and gradually improve soil structure as the chips break down. Allow freshly chipped material from diseased trees to dry before applying to garden beds.

### What should I NOT put through a wood chipper?

Never feed the following into a wood chipper: branches above the machine's rated diameter capacity, material with embedded wire, nails, or metal fittings, palm fronds (fibrous material can jam the cutting drum), and vines or climbing plants that can tangle in the mechanism. Always inspect material before feeding.

### How long does it take to chip a standard yard's worth of green waste?

For a typical residential yard clean-up involving prunings and tree trimmings, a 150mm diesel chipper can process the equivalent of a standard ute load of branches in approximately 30 to 60 minutes, depending on branch size and density. Most residential jobs are completed comfortably within a single day hire.

Wood chipper Hire: How to Safely Clear Your Yard and Garden

With the right concrete cutting hire, the job becomes faster, cleaner, and safer - regardless of your experience level.

Getting the cut right starts with choosing the right saw. Whether you are opening a trench in a driveway, trimming a doorway through a concrete block wall, or cutting expansion joints in a freshly poured slab, the wrong equipment leads to slow progress, rough edges, and unnecessary wear on blades. With the right concrete cutting hire, the job becomes faster, cleaner, and safer - regardless of your experience level.

At Flexihire, we stock a comprehensive range of concrete cutting equipment across 18 branches in Queensland and Northern- NSW, including quick cut saws, brick saws, tile saws, and core drills. This guide will help you match the right machine to your specific job, understand blade selection, and work safely.

## Types of Concrete Cutting Equipment Available for Hire

Concrete cutting covers a wide range of tasks - from shallow surface cuts in a footpath to precise tile trimming or deep core drilling through structural slabs. Each requires a different tool. Flexihire's concrete cutting hire range covers the following categories.

### Quick Cut Saws (Demolition Saws)

The quick cut saw - also called a demolition saw or cutoff saw - is the most widely hired concrete cutting tool on Australian job sites. It is a handheld, petrol-powered saw fitted with a circular diamond blade that can cut through concrete, asphalt, masonry, and paving in the field without the need for a power source or water connection (though wet cutting is recommended).

Whether you’re searching for quickcut saw hire or a concrete cutting machine hire that handles everything from paving joints to block trimming, Flexihire’s Quick Cut Saw 12in with Diamond Blade is the most practical starting point for general site work. Its adjustable cutting depth, ergonomic handle design, and hose connection for dust suppression make it suitable for both professional contractors and capable DIYers. The 12-inch blade delivers clean, accurate cuts to a depth of approximately 100mm to 120mm in a single pass.

Best for: expansion joints, control joints in slabs, cutting paving and kerbing, opening trenches in driveways, trimming concrete blocks, and general site work where portability is important.

### Brick Saws

A brick saw is a bench-mounted or track-mounted wet saw designed for precise, repeatable cuts through bricks, blocks, pavers, and masonry units. Unlike a quick cut saw, which is handheld and suited to longer, shallower cuts across a surface, a brick saw accepts the workpiece on a sliding table and pushes it through a fixed diamond blade - producing consistent, clean cuts with controlled dimensions.

Brick saws use water continuously during cutting to cool the blade, suppress dust, and maintain cutting precision. They are the preferred tool whenever dimensional accuracy is a priority.

Best for: brick and block laying, paving projects requiring cut units, retaining wall construction, and any masonry work where cut precision determines the finish quality.

### Tile Saws and Tile Cutters

Tile saws are wet saws optimised for cutting ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, and similar hard tile products. They operate on the same principle as brick saws but are sized and configured specifically for thinner, more brittle materials. For large-format tiles or natural stone slabs, a tile saw prevents the chipping and cracking that manual tile cutters can cause.

Best for: floor and wall tiling, pool surrounds, bathroom and kitchen renovations, and any project involving precision cuts through hard or brittle tile products.

### Concrete Core Drills

A core drill uses a hollow, diamond-tipped cylindrical bit to drill clean, circular holes through concrete and masonry. Unlike impact drilling, which fractures the surrounding material, core drilling produces a precise hole with smooth internal walls - essential for plumbing penetrations, conduit installations, anchor bolts, and drainage outlets through concrete slabs or walls.

Best for: creating penetrations for pipes, cables, and conduits through concrete walls and floors, installing drainage outlets, and any application requiring a clean, circular hole through reinforced concrete.

## 12-Inch vs 16-Inch Diamond Blades: Which Do You Need?

Blade diameter is directly linked to maximum cutting depth. Selecting the correct blade size for your job ensures you can complete the cut in the minimum number of passes and avoid overloading the saw.

### 12-Inch Diamond Blades

A 12-inch diamond blade fitted to a standard quick cut saw provides a maximum cutting depth of approximately 100mm to 120mm. This covers the majority of residential and light commercial concrete cutting tasks, including standard paving slabs (typically 40-60mm thick), residential driveways (typically 75-100mm), and expansion or control joints in slabs up to 100mm deep.

Flexihire’s Quick Cut 12in saw uses a 12-inch diamond blade as standard and is the most commonly hired concrete saw for residential and trade work across Queensland and Northern-NSW - if you’re looking for [concrete saw hire in Brisbane](https://www.flexihire.com.au/concreting-equipment/concrete-cutting/), this is the machine most hirers start with for driveways, slabs, and paving jobs.

### 16-Inch Diamond Blades

A 16-inch diamond blade increases the maximum single-pass cutting depth to approximately 130mm to 150mm. This is required when cutting through thicker commercial slabs, reinforced concrete, or when multiple cutting depths are impractical. The 16-inch configuration is more common on larger walk-behind saws used for commercial and civil applications.

For jobs where depth is uncertain, contact Flexihire's team before booking - they can advise on the right blade size based on your slab specification.

## Wet Cutting vs Dry Cutting: What You Need to Know

Concrete cutting generates large volumes of fine silica dust, which poses a serious respiratory health risk with prolonged exposure. Choosing between wet and dry cutting affects both dust management and blade performance.

### Wet Cutting

Wet cutting uses a continuous stream of water directed at the blade during the cut. The water cools the diamond segments, significantly extending blade life, suppresses silica dust at the source, and improves cutting speed and accuracy. Wet cutting is the standard method for most outdoor concrete cutting tasks and is strongly recommended wherever a water supply is accessible.

Flexihire's quick cut saws include a hose connection for wet cutting. Connecting a standard garden hose during operation is all that is required for effective dust suppression on most residential and commercial jobs.

### Dry Cutting

Dry cutting is used where water is not practical - typically in enclosed indoor spaces such as garages, warehouse floors, or interior renovation projects. Dry cutting generates significantly more dust and accelerates blade wear, so it is important to use a blade rated for dry cutting and to connect an effective vacuum dust extraction system to the saw.

For indoor dry cutting, Flexihire's team can advise on appropriate dust extraction equipment to hire alongside the concrete saw to meet workplace health and safety requirements for silica dust management.

## Concrete Cutting Safety: Key Requirements

Concrete cutting is classified as a high-risk task under Australian workplace health and safety legislation, primarily due to silica dust exposure and the hazards associated with high-speed rotating blades. All hirers should be aware of the following requirements before commencing work.

### 1. PPE Requirements

The minimum PPE for concrete cutting includes safety glasses or a full-face shield, hearing protection (petrol-powered saws produce significant noise), a P2-rated dust mask or respirator (mandatory for dry cutting, recommended for all concrete cutting), steel-capped boots, and close-fitting gloves. High-visibility clothing is required on all active construction sites.

### 2. Silica Dust Management

Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is released when concrete, masonry, and stone are cut, drilled, or ground. Prolonged exposure causes silicosis - an irreversible and potentially fatal lung disease. Wet cutting or vacuum dust extraction is required under the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 for all powered concrete cutting tasks. Flexihire's Info Hub provides risk assessments and safe operating procedures for all concrete cutting equipment.

### 3. Blade Inspection

Before each use, inspect the diamond blade for cracks, missing segments, or damage. A damaged blade can disintegrate at operating speed, presenting an extreme hazard. Never use a blade that shows visible damage and always confirm the blade's rated speed exceeds the saw's operating RPM before fitting.

### 4. Instructional Video

Flexihire provides an instructional video for the Quick Cut Saw range through the Flexihire Info Hub. Hirers are strongly encouraged to watch this before operating the equipment for the first time. The video covers setup, blade fitting, depth adjustment, water connection, safe starting procedure, and cut technique.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between a quick cut saw and a concrete saw?

A quick cut saw is a handheld, portable petrol-powered saw designed for shallow cuts in concrete, asphalt, and masonry. A concrete saw refers broadly to any powered saw used for cutting concrete, including quick cut saws, brick saws, tile saws, and walk-behind flat saws. The right type depends on the depth, precision, and volume of cutting required.

### How deep can a quick cut saw cut?

A standard 12-inch quick cut saw with a diamond blade can cut to a depth of approximately 100mm to 120mm in a single pass. For deeper cuts, multiple passes at increasing depths are required, or a larger walk-behind flat saw may be more appropriate.

### Do I need a diamond blade for concrete cutting?

Yes. Diamond blades are the standard choice for cutting concrete, asphalt, and masonry. They use industrial diamond segments bonded to the blade edge to grind through hard materials cleanly and efficiently. Abrasive blades can be used for lighter work but wear quickly and produce less precise cuts.

### Do I need water suppression when cutting concrete?

Wet cutting with water suppression is strongly recommended for most concrete cutting tasks. Water cools the blade, reduces dust, and extends blade life. For indoor or enclosed spaces where water use is not practical, dry cutting with an appropriate diamond blade and vacuum dust extraction is the correct approach.

### Can I hire concrete cutting equipment in Brisbane?

Concrete Cutting Hire: How to Choose the Right Saw for the Job

Hiring scaffolding gives tradespeople and property owners a stable, secure working platform for tasks at height.

Yes, you can hire scaffolding for residential, commercial, and industrial projects across Australia, provided you work with a compliant supplier and follow current safety regulations. From small home improvement jobs to large construction sites, scaffold hire is widely available and accessible. The key is understanding your legal obligations, site requirements, and safety responsibilities before arranging delivery. At Flexihire, we support customers across Queensland and Northern- NSW with practical scaffold hire solutions suited to local conditions and industry standards.

Hiring scaffolding gives tradespeople and property owners a stable, secure working platform for tasks at height. Whether you are painting a two-storey home, installing new roofing, repairing gutters, or managing a commercial build, scaffolding often provides better access and improved safety compared to ladders alone. However, before you book, there are important checks that can save time, money, and risk.

## Why Hire Scaffolding Instead of Buying?

For most projects, hiring makes financial and practical sense. Purchasing scaffolding outright can be expensive, especially if it is only needed for a short period. Storage, maintenance, transport, and compliance checks also become your responsibility.

Scaffold hire through Flexihire allows you to access compliant equipment without long term commitment. You only pay for the period you need, and you can adjust the hire duration if your project runs longer than expected. This flexibility is particularly useful for renovation work where timelines may shift due to weather or supply delays.

### 1. Confirm Compliance With Australian Standards

Scaffolding in Australia must meet strict Work Health and Safety requirements. Each state and territory has regulations that govern how scaffolding is erected, inspected, and used.

If a scaffold platform exceeds four metres in height, it is classed as high riskhigh-risk work and must be installed by a licensed scaffolder. Always confirm whether your project falls into this category. Reputable providers like Flexihire can advise you on what is required and ensure that installation is carried out correctly where necessary.

Non-compliant scaffolding can result in fines, site shutdowns, and serious injury. Confirming compliance is one of the first and most important steps.

### 2. Identify the Right Type of Scaffolding

Scaffolding is not a one size fits all solution. Different structures are designed for specific tasks and site conditions. Common options include:

- Mobile aluminium scaffold towers for painting, electrical work, and maintenance
- Steel frame scaffolding for bricklaying, rendering, and external renovations
- Modular scaffolding systems for complex commercial builds
- Cantilever scaffolds where ground access is restricted
- Stair access scaffolds for safe vertical movement on larger sites

Choosing the correct system depends on height, load requirements, ground conditions, and the scope of work. Providing accurate measurements and site details to your supplier helps prevent under ordering or costly changes after delivery.

### 3. Understand Load Ratings and Duty Classes

Every scaffold system has a designated duty rating. In Australia, scaffolds are typically classified as light, medium, or heavy duty.

- Light duty scaffolding suits painting and light maintenance.
- Medium duty is used for general trades work.
- Heavy duty scaffolding supports bricklaying, masonry, and heavier materials.

Overloading scaffolding is dangerous and can cause structural failure. Confirm that the hired system can safely support workers, tools, and materials. If you are unsure, discuss your intended use with Flexihire so the correct rating is supplied.

### 4. Check Ground Conditions and Stability

Scaffolding must be erected on stable, level ground. Uneven surfaces, sloping driveways, loose soil, or recently backfilled areas may require additional preparation.

Base plates and sole boards are commonly used to distribute weight evenly. In some cases, minor site preparation may be necessary before installation. Ignoring ground conditions can compromise safety and cause shifting during use.

Australian weather should also be considered. High winds, heavy rain, and extreme heat can affect scaffold stability and worker safety. Ensure the scaffold is secured correctly and inspected after severe weather events.

### 5. Clarify Delivery, Installation, and Dismantling

Not all scaffold hire arrangements include installation. Some smaller mobile towers are supplied for self-assembly, while larger systems require professional setup.

Ask the hire company:

- Is delivery included in the quoted price?
- Who is responsible for erection and dismantling?
- Are inspections required during the hire period?

For larger residential or commercial jobs, understanding who handles setup and dismantling is essential before work begins. Flexihire offers delivery to your site to help keep your project on schedule - installation and dismantling remain the responsibility of the customer or their team.

### 6. Confirm Insurance and Liability Responsibilities

Scaffold hire involves shared responsibility between the supplier and the hirer. The supplier typically covers equipment maintenance and structural compliance. The hirer is responsible for safe use on site.

Check that the hire company carries adequate public liability insurance. You should also confirm that your own business or home insurance policy covers hired equipment.

Understanding liability before work begins reduces confusion if damage or incidents occur during the hire period.

### 7. Inspect the Equipment on Arrival

When scaffolding arrives on site, inspect it before use. Look for:

- Bent frames or braces
- Damaged planks
- Missing locking pins or guardrails
- Excessive rust or corrosion

Quality providers maintain and inspect their stock regularly. Reporting any concerns immediately ensures they can be addressed before work begins.

### 8. Consider Access and Public Safety

If scaffolding is positioned near public footpaths or neighbouring properties, additional safety measures may be required. These can include:

- Safety mesh or debris netting
- Toe boards
- Temporary fencing
- Signage

If scaffolding extends onto public land, such as a council footpath, a permit may be required. Regulations vary by council, so check local requirements before installation.

### 9. Plan the Hire Duration Carefully

Accurate planning helps avoid unnecessary hire extensions. Consider the scope of work, potential weather delays, and coordination with other trades.

If your project timeline changes, contact your supplier as soon as possible. Many companies, including Flexihire, offer flexible extensions if arranged in advance.

Hiring for too short a period can create pressure and safety risks if workers rush to complete tasks before collection.

### 10. Training and Safe Use

Even with professionally installed scaffolding, workers must use it correctly. Basic safety practices include:

- Keeping platforms free of debris
- Using guardrails and toe boards
- Avoiding unauthorised modifications
- Not climbing on external frames
- Conducting visual checks before each shift

Workplace supervisors should ensure that anyone using scaffolding understands site safety requirements.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can You Hire Scaffolding for a home renovation?

Yes, scaffolding can be hired for home renovations such as painting, roofing, and extensions. For structures above four metres, a licensed scaffolder must complete the installation.

### How much does scaffold hire cost in Queensland?

Pricing depends on height, size, duration, and installation requirements. Small mobile towers cost less than full perimeter scaffolding. Contact Flexihire for a project specific quote.

### Is scaffolding safer than using ladders?

In many cases, yes. Scaffolding provides a wider, more stable platform that allows workers to move safely while handling tools and materials. When installed and used correctly, it reduces fall risk compared to ladders alone.

### Do I need council approval to hire scaffolding?

If the scaffold remains entirely within your property boundary, approval is generally not required. If it encroaches onto public space, council permits may be necessary.

### How long can I hire scaffolding?

Hire periods can range from a few days to several months. Flexible terms allow you to extend if needed, subject to availability.

Can You Hire Scaffolding? Key Things to Check First

With Portable Cold Room Hire from Flexihire, you can maintain food safety compliance and protect perishable goods, even during heatwaves.

Portable Cold Room Hire gives businesses and event organisers a flexible, cost-effective way to keep food, drinks and temperature sensitive stock at safe, consistent temperatures without investing in permanent refrigeration. For Queensland businesses facing hot summers, seasonal demand and outdoor events, hiring a portable cold room from Flexihire can protect stock, meet food safety standards and support smooth operations from start to finish.

Whether you run a catering company, manage a festival, operate a café, or coordinate a corporate function, reliable refrigeration is essential. Here is how Portable Cold Room Hire can support your business or event.

## Reliable Temperature Control in Queensland Conditions

Queensland’s climate can be harsh, particularly during summer months and in regional areas. Standard refrigeration units may struggle during peak heat, especially when doors are opened frequently.

Portable cold rooms are built to maintain stable temperatures even in warm conditions. This makes them ideal for:

- Outdoor weddings and private functions
- Music festivals and community events
- Sporting events and school fetes
- Hospitality venues during peak trade periods

With Portable Cold Room Hire from Flexihire, you can maintain food safety compliance and protect perishable goods, even during heatwaves.

## Cost Effective Alternative to Buying Equipment

Purchasing a permanent cold room can be expensive and impractical, particularly for short term needs. Installation costs, maintenance, repairs and storage all add to the total expense.

Hiring allows businesses to:

- Avoid large upfront costs
- Access commercial grade refrigeration only when needed
- Scale up during busy seasons
- Return equipment once the event or peak period is over

This flexibility is particularly useful for restaurants during Christmas trade, event caterers during wedding season, and retailers managing temporary stock increases.

## Quick Setup and Easy Access

Time is critical when organising an event or responding to unexpected refrigeration breakdowns. Portable cold rooms can be delivered directly to your site and positioned for convenient access.

Flexihire provides units that are easy to use and suitable for:

- Back of house event operations
- Construction sites requiring temperature-controlled storage
- Temporary kitchen expansions
- Emergency refrigeration during equipment failure

The straightforward setup means you can focus on running your business rather than worrying about logistics.

## Supports Food Safety Compliance

Australian food safety standards require strict temperature control for perishable goods. Failure to maintain safe temperatures can result in spoiled stock, financial loss and compliance issues.

Portable Cold Room Hire helps businesses:

- Store meat, seafood and dairy at compliant temperatures
- Keep beverages chilled for service
- Separate raw and cooked products safely
- Maintain hygiene standards during large scale catering

For event organisers, this is especially important when working with local councils and health inspectors.

## Flexible Sizes for Different Needs

Not every business requires the same storage capacity. Portable cold rooms come in various sizes, making it easy to choose a unit that matches your specific requirements.

For example:

- Small units for cafes or pop-up stalls
- Medium units for weddings and private functions
- Larger units for festivals, markets or commercial kitchens

Flexihire offers options suitable for both short term events and longer hire periods, allowing businesses across Queensland and Northern-NSW to adjust as needed.

## Ideal for Emergency Situations

Unexpected refrigeration breakdowns can disrupt operations and cause significant stock loss. Portable Cold Room Hire provides a fast solution during equipment failure or renovations.

Instead of shutting down or risking spoiled goods, businesses can continue operating while permanent systems are repaired.

This makes hire services especially valuable for:

- Supermarkets
- Restaurants
- Aged care facilities
- Florists
- Pharmaceutical storage where applicable

## Perfect for Events of All Sizes

From intimate backyard celebrations to large public festivals, event refrigeration needs vary greatly. Portable cold rooms provide extra storage space for caterers, beverage suppliers and event coordinators.

They can be used for:

- Food prep storage
- Bar stock overflow
- Ice storage
- Cake and dessert storage
- Flower preservation

With Queensland and Northern- NSW's outdoor event culture, reliable temporary refrigeration plays a key role in smooth event delivery.

## Easy Scalability for Growing Businesses

Growing hospitality businesses often face seasonal spikes in demand. Instead of permanently expanding refrigeration capacity, hiring provides a flexible approach.

For example:

- A coastal café during summer holidays
- A catering company handling multiple weekend bookings
- A brewery hosting a special launch event

Portable Cold Room Hire allows you to increase storage only when required, supporting business growth without long term financial commitment.

## Efficient Cold Storage Solutions for Events & Businesses

Benefits of Portable Cold Room Hire for Businesses & Events

At Flexihire, we supply shipping containers designed for practical, secure storage in both metro and regional environments, helping businesses protect their assets with confidence.

Yes, shipping containers are secure enough for valuable goods when they are structurally sound, fitted with quality locking systems and placed in a well-managed location. Across Queensland, and Northern-NSW businesses rely on containers to store tools, machinery, retail stock and event equipment because they offer strength, durability and controlled access.

At Flexihire, we supply shipping containers designed for practical, secure storage in both metro and regional environments, helping businesses protect their assets with confidence.

For anyone asking, are shipping containers secure for high value items, the answer depends on the condition of the container and the security measures used alongside it. With the right setup, they provide a highly dependable storage solution.

## Why Shipping Containers Are Built for Security

Shipping containers were originally engineered for international freight. They carry cargo across oceans, endure crane lifting, stacking and exposure to harsh marine weather. That same design strength makes them an effective option for secure storage on land.

### Heavy Duty Steel Construction

Most containers are made from corten steel, known for its durability and corrosion resistance. The steel walls, roof and doors are reinforced to handle stacking weight and long-term transport. This means they are far stronger than standard sheds or lightweight storage units.

The rigid frame and welded seams limit weak points, making unauthorised entry significantly harder without specialised tools. For businesses storing high value goods, that structural strength forms the first layer of protection.

### Industrial Grade Doors and Locking Bars

Container doors are designed with vertical locking bars that secure tightly into reinforced door frames. When locked properly, they create multiple fixed points that are difficult to pry open.

To improve security further, many containers can be fitted with:

- Lock boxes that shield padlocks from bolt cutters
- High security padlocks
- Internal locking mechanisms
- Digital or smart lock systems
- Alarm and monitoring systems

At Flexihire, we help clients choose suitable locking solutions depending on the

value of stored goods and the location of the container.

## How Are Containers Secured on Ships?

The way containers are built to withstand ocean freight conditions speaks directly to their structural integrity. During international freight operations, containers are stacked several levels high on cargo vessels. To keep them in place, twist locks are fitted at the corner castings, connecting each container to the one above and below it. Lashing rods and turnbuckles are then used to anchor the stacks directly to the vessel deck, adding another layer of stability against movement.

These systems prevent movement during strong winds, heavy seas and long-distance travel. Containers must withstand constant vibration, pressure and shifting loads without structural failure. The fact that they can endure these extreme conditions shows why they are so resilient when used for ground storage in Australia.

If containers remain secure during ocean transport, they are more than capable of providing safe storage for valuable goods on land when properly installed.

## Security in Australian Conditions

Australia presents unique environmental and operational challenges. From humid coastal regions to remote mining sites and busy construction zones, storage solutions must handle both weather exposure and potential security risks.

When assessing whether shipping containers are secure for your specific needs, consider the following factors.

### Site Location and Visibility

The placement of a container plays a major role in overall security. A container positioned in a well-lit, visible area is less likely to attract unwanted attention. If possible, install it within a fenced perimeter or behind gated access.

For worksites and commercial premises, combining container storage with CCTV systems, security patrols or access control measures strengthens overall protection.

### Stable and Level Foundations

A level base ensures the container doors align properly and close securely. Uneven ground can cause door misalignment over time, creating potential gaps or stress points. A simple compacted gravel pad or concrete slab provides a stable foundation.

### Weather Protection and Maintenance

In coastal areas such as Sydney, Brisbane or Perth, salt air can accelerate surface corrosion. While corten steel resists rust, regular inspections help maintain integrity. Address minor rust patches early and check door seals to prevent water ingress.

Flexihire containers are inspected before delivery, reducing the risk of structural or mechanical issues from the outset.

## Layered Security for High Value Goods

While shipping containers are strong, high value storage often benefits from layered security. This approach combines physical strength with monitoring and deterrence.

### Physical Reinforcement

Options may include:

- Upgraded lock boxes
- Internal security bars
- Reinforced hinges
- Steel shrouds over locking points

These measures make forced entry more time consuming and more noticeable.

### Monitoring and Surveillance

Adding external lighting, CCTV cameras or alarm systems significantly increases deterrence. Motion activated lighting can be especially effective for rural or industrial sites.

### Access Control

Limiting key access and maintaining clear records of authorised users reduces internal security risks. For businesses storing expensive equipment or stock, clear access procedures are just as important as physical strength.

## Common Uses for Secure Container Storage

Shipping containers are widely used across Australia for secure storage in many industries.

### Construction and Trades

Builders and contractors often store tools, power equipment and materials on site. Containers provide secure, weather resistant storage that can be relocated as projects progress.

### Retail and Warehousing

Retailers use containers to manage overflow stock, seasonal inventory and event equipment. Lockable steel storage offers protection without requiring permanent building extensions.

### Events and Festivals

Temporary events require short term, secure storage for staging, sound equipment and catering supplies. Containers provide a flexible solution that can be delivered and removed as needed.

### Mining and Remote Projects

In regional and remote areas, containers are used to store machinery parts, fuel equipment and sensitive tools. Their solid construction is well suited to isolated environments.

## Are Shipping Containers Secure for Long Term Use?

Yes, when maintained correctly. Long term security depends on regular inspections and upkeep. Check locks, hinges and seals periodically. Replace worn components promptly and keep the exterior free from excessive rust build up.

Ventilation may also be necessary for certain goods. Condensation can develop in some climates, so consider ventilation upgrades or moisture control solutions if storing sensitive items.

Flexihire offers flexible hire terms, making it easy for businesses to scale storage needs up or down while maintaining secure conditions.

## Situations Where Extra Protection Is Recommended

Although containers are secure, certain scenarios call for additional measures:

- Storing high value electronics
- Keeping confidential documents
- Long term unattended storage
- Remote sites with limited supervision

In these cases, integrating alarm systems, tracking devices or enhanced locking systems provides added reassurance.

Security is rarely about one feature alone. A combination of strong physical barriers, visibility and monitoring produces better results than relying on a single method.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Are shipping containers secure against theft?

Yes, they are designed with heavy steel walls and reinforced doors, making unauthorised entry difficult. Adding lock boxes and quality padlocks further strengthens protection.

### How are containers secured on ships during ocean transport?

Containers are secured using twist locks and lashing systems that connect them to each other and to the ship’s deck. This prevents movement during rough sea conditions.

### Can a shipping container be broken into?

While no storage solution is completely immune, breaking into a shipping container requires significant effort and tools. Their strength acts as a deterrent, especially when combined with external security measures.

### Are shipping containers suitable for storing expensive machinery?

Yes, they are commonly used across Australia to store tools, plant equipment and machinery. For higher value items, consider additional locking systems and site security features.

Skid steer or mini loader? Compare features, uses, and benefits to choose the right compact hire equipment for construction or landscaping jobs.

## Skid Steers vs Mini Loaders?

When it comes to earthmoving and material handling, bigger isn’t always better. For many construction, landscaping, and trade projects, compact equipment like [**Skid Steer Loaders**](/earthmoving-equipment/skid-steer-loaders/) and mini loaders [**Mini Loaders**](/earthmoving-equipment/mini-loaders/) can get the job done faster, safer, and more cost-effectively.
At Flexihire, we see a growing demand for smaller hire equipment - especially skid steers and mini loaders. Both machines are incredibly versatile but knowing which one to hire can make a big difference to productivity on site.

Let’s break it down:

## What Is a Skid Steer Loader?

A skid steer loader is a powerful, compact machine with a rigid frame and lift arms that support a wide range of attachments - from buckets and forks through to post-hole diggers and stump grinders. At Flexihire, our fleet offers both wheeled and tracked options, to suit your job.

**Key Features of Skid Steers**
1. High lifting capacity for their size
2. Exceptional manoeuvrability using skid-steer steering
3. Strong breakout force for digging and loading
4. Compatible with a wide range of attachments

**Common Uses**
1. - Construction and demolition
2. - Earthmoving
3. - Trenching and post-hole boring
4. - Roadwork and site prep

Skid steers are ideal when you need power and performance in a compact footprint, whether it’s for residential, commercial or industrial job sites.

## What Is a Mini Loader?

A mini loader is a small, light machine designed for tight access areas and delicate surfaces. They’re especially popular for landscaping and residential work.

**Key Features of Mini Loaders**
1. - Narrow width for backyard and gate access
2. - Lightweight - ideal for soft ground and turf
3. - Easy to transport on smaller trailers
4. - Simple controls and quick setup

**Common Uses**
1. - Landscaping and turf work
2. - Backyard renovations
3. - Fence installation
4. - Material handling in confined spaces

Mini loaders shine when access is limited and ground impact needs to be kept to a minimum

## When Should You Use a Skid Steer?
Choose a skid steer loader when:
1. - You’re moving heavy materials like soil, gravel, or concrete
2. - The site has good access and stable ground
3. - You need maximum power from a compact machine
4. - You’re running multiple attachments on one job

Skid steers are the go-to machine for high-output worksites where time and efficiency matter.

## When Is a Mini Loader the Better Choice?

A mini loader is the better option when:
1. - Access is tight (think gates, paths, and courtyards)
2. - You’re working on lawns, pavers, or finished surfaces
3. - The job is residential or light commercial
4. - Transport and setup need to be quick and easy

For landscapers and tradies, mini loaders often deliver more flexibility with less site disruption.

## Why Small Hire Equipment Makes Sense

Hiring compact machines like skid steers and mini loaders can:
1. - Reduce transport and fuel costs
2. - Minimise site damage
3. - Improve safety in confined areas
4. - Increase efficiency on small-to-medium jobs

At Flexihire, our smaller equipment range is designed to help you work smarter, not harder.

Hiring an EWP? Here’s Why Flexihire Should Be Your First Choice

Not sure which forklift you need? Our guide explains capacity, height, terrain, and safety to help you pick the right forklift for any job.

# **How to Choose the Right Forklift for the Job**

Whether you're moving pallets on a construction site, loading a container or truck, or shifting stock in a warehouse, choosing the right forklift for the job can make all the difference in efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. At Flexihire, we offer a wide range of material handling equipment across Queensland and northern New South Wales, and we’re here to help you pick the best one for your needs.

Here’s what you need to consider when hiring a forklift:

### **1. Understand Your Lifting Requirements**

Start with the basics:
- Load weight – How heavy is the typical load you’ll be lifting?
- Lift height – How high do you need to raise your materials?
- Load type – Are you moving pallets, bulk materials, or something more unusual?

At Flexihire, our forklifts come in a variety of weight capacities and lift heights. Be sure to choose a model that not only meets but slightly exceeds your needs for added safety.

### **2. Consider the Work Environment**

Your worksite plays a huge role in determining the right forklift:
- Indoor or outdoor use? LPG forklifts are great for indoor use due to their lower emissions compared to diesel-powered options. Diesel options are better suited for outdoor work environments.
- Ground surface – Smooth concrete or uneven, gravelly surfaces? For rougher ground, consider a Rough-Terrain forklift, to conquer the outdoors.
- Tight spaces – If you’re working in a tight warehouse or confined construction site, a Container-Mast Forklift might be the right choice, thanks to their compact design and exceptional manoeuvrability.

### **3. Fuel Type Matters**

We offer forklifts powered by diesel and LPG. Each has its advantages:
- Diesel: Great for outdoor use and heavy lifting. Powerful and durable.
- LPG: Suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. Fast refuelling.

Need help deciding? Our helpful Flexihire team are all experts and can guide you through the pros and cons of each option.

### **4. Don’t Forget Attachments**

Sometimes a standard forklift isn’t enough. Consider whether you’ll need:
- Fork extensions
- Rotators or clamps
- Work platforms and cages

We have a range of forklift attachments available for hire to make your job even easier and more efficient.

### **5. Check Access and Transport Requirements**

Will the forklift fit through your entry points or onto your site? Do you need us to deliver the equipment? Flexihire offers fast, flexible delivery options and can help ensure the forklift you choose is accessible and ready when you need it.

### **6. Talk to the Experts**

Choosing the right forklift doesn’t need to be complicated. Our expert team at Flexihire can help assess your site conditions and load requirements to recommend the perfect machine for your job.

#### Ready to Hire?

We stock a wide range of forklifts across all 16 Flexihire branches – from electric walk-behind forklifts to heavy-duty all-terrain models. If you’re unsure where to start, give us a call or drop into your local branch. We’re here to help you get the job done right.

The Flexihire Hiring Process - And How Easy It Is!

Whether you're trenching, lifting, or digging footings, choosing the right excavator for the job can save you time, money, and a whole lot of frustration.

# **How to choose the right excavator for the job**

Whether you're trenching, lifting, or digging footings, choosing the right excavator for the job can save you time, money, and a whole lot of frustration.
At Flexihire, we’ve helped thousands of customers, from first-time 'DIYers' to seasoned contractors, pick the right gear.

Here's what to consider when hiring your next excavator.

### **1. Understand the Job Requirements**

Start by asking:
1. What type of work are you doing? (Trenching, demolition, landscaping, lifting, etc.)

2. How deep and wide will you need to dig?

3. Are you working in tight or open spaces?

4. Will you need attachments like augers or buckets?

The more specific you are, the better match we can recommend!

### **2. Consider the Excavator Size**

Excavators come in a range of sizes - each suited for different work zones and lifting capabilities.

**Mini Excavators (0.8–3.5T)**
- Best for: Tight spaces, backyard projects, small footings, and plumbing trenches.

- Why hire: Compact, easy to transport, and simple to operate.

**Medium Excavators (5–8T)**
- Best for: Residential construction, drainage work, moderate site clearing.

- Why hire: Stronger digging power and more stability, still reasonably nimble.

**Large Excavators (10T+)**
- Best for: Large-scale civil works, demolition, commercial construction.

- Why hire: Serious power, extended reach, ideal for heavy-duty digging and lifting.

### **3. Check Site Access & Conditions**

Measure your site access before you hire:
- Will the machine need to fit through gates or between buildings?

- Are there soft, wet, or uneven surfaces?

- Is there overhead clearance for swing radius?

Our team can help match the right track width and tail-swing configuration to your site.

### **4. Choose the Right Attachments**

Maximise your hire with the right tools for the job:
- Buckets (standard, mud, or trenching)

- Augers (for post holes or fencing)

- Rock breakers (for demolition or tough ground)

- Grabs (for moving debris or timber)

Let us know what you’re doing - we’ll suggest the best fit.

### **5. Don’t Forget Operator Experience**

If it’s your first time on a machine, stick to:
- Mini diggers (they’re easier to control)

- Machines with zero tail-swing (to avoid hitting things)

- Flexible hire options so you’re not rushed

### **6. Ask the Professionals**

Not sure? That’s where we come in! At Flexihire, we:
- Walk you through your job requirements

- Match you with the right excavator and attachments

- Deliver gear across Queensland and Northern NSW - fast

We’ll help you get the job done right, the first time.

Christmas & New Year Trading 2024/2025

Safety is non-negotiable in the hire industry. See how Flexihire prioritises the safety of our customers and teams with high quality and well maintained equipment.

## How Flexihire ensures proper handling and maintenance of rental equipment

In our industry, safety is non-negotiable. From heavy machinery operation to tool usage, every aspect of a work site carries inherent risks that must be mitigated through rigorous safety protocols. At all of our Flexihire [**branches**](/branch/), we prioritise the safety of our customers and their teams by providing high-quality and extremely well-maintained [**equipment**](/equipment-hire/), as well as comprehensive guidance on proper handling. In this article, we'll delve into the importance of prioritising safety and outline key practices for ensuring the safe operation of the equipment.

### Why Safety Matters:

Construction sites are dynamic environments where multiple activities are carried out simultaneously, often in close proximity. Accidents resulting from improper equipment handling or maintenance can lead to serious injuries, project delays, and financial liabilities. By prioritising safety, construction companies and DIY specialists can protect themselves, their workers, maintain project timelines, and uphold their reputation for professionalism and reliability.

### Proper Handling of Rental Equipment:

1. Training and Certification: Before operating any [rental equipment](https://www.flexihire.com.au/), ensure that operators are adequately trained and certified to handle the specific machinery. Flexihire provides comprehensive operation manuals and risk assessment information via our [**Info Hub**](/info-hub/) portal, to familiarise operators with equipment functions, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
2. Read Manufacturer's Manuals: Familiarise yourself with the manufacturer's manuals and safety guidelines for each piece of equipment. Pay close attention to recommended operating procedures and safety precautions to minimise the risk of accidents or malfunctions.
3. Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Ensure that all personnel operating or working near equipment wear appropriate PPE, including hard hats, safety goggles, gloves, and steel-cap boots. PPE helps minimise the risk of injuries from falling debris, flying particles, or accidental contact with moving machinery parts.
**
### Flexihire Maintenance Practices:

1. At Flexihire, we strictly adhere to all maintenance schedules for every single piece of equipment. Regular maintenance tasks such as lubrication, filter replacement, fluid checks and pre-hire inspections are essential for ensuring optimal equipment performance for our customers.
2. We keep our equipment spotless! We clean our equipment from top to bottom in between each rental, removing dirt, debris, and corrosive substances that can compromise the equipment’s functionality and structural integrity, ensuring we use appropriate cleaning agents and techniques to avoid damaging sensitive components or surfaces.
3. We’re here to help! Report any equipment malfunctions, unusual noises, or performance issues to Flexihire immediately. Avoid using damaged or malfunctioning equipment until it has been inspected and repaired by our qualified Flexihire technicians to prevent accidents or further damage - your safety is paramount!
4. Equipment storage: When not in use, our equipment is stored in a secure, well-ventilated area away from extreme temperatures, moisture, and corrosive substances. By following proper storage guidelines, Flexihire is able to prevent premature wear and deterioration, ensuring our equipment cements its place as the best in the industry!

In conclusion, prioritising safety and proper maintenance practices are essential for maximising the efficiency and safety of our Flexihire equipment. By following the guidelines outlined above and partnering with a trusted rental provider like FlexiHire, construction companies and handymen can ensure a safe and productive work environment for themselves and their teams whilst achieving project success. Remember, safety always comes first at Flexihire!

Calculating what generator size you need for your job - Flexihire

Instructional article for calculating which generator is required for power requirements.

Calculating the size of your generator can be difficult. Amps, voltage, KW and KVA are all common power terms. Typically generators are measured in KVA, motors in KW and other loads such as welders in amps and volts. So as a simple rule of thumb, these formulas should help.

KW Single Phase = Volts x Amps
KVA Single Phase = KW x PF or(=Volts x Amps x PF)

Disability Employment at Flexihire Yeppoon

Flexihire is a disability employment services advocate, recently welcoming Robert Wake to our Yeppoon Branch.

Flexihire is a proud Queensland company and we are passionate about supporting people and businesses in the local communities where we operate. Our [**Yeppoon**](/branch/yeppoon) branch welcomed a [**new employee**](/work-with-us) last month with Robert Wake commencing work on 19 January. Rob (as he likes to be called) is an extraordinary young man with a range of challenging disabilities that have limited his capacity to find meaningful work.

Rob’s clinical diagnosis is very complex and includes a genetic disorder called mixaploidy/tetraploidy, severe autism, hypotonia, muscular scoliosis, sensory processing disorder and global developmental delay. Whilst Rob is non-verbal, he is a great listener and able to follow instructions.

The team at Yeppoon first met Rob through his passion for machinery which saw him visit the branch each week to spend time around the equipment. Recognising Rob’s curiosity and how much positive energy he brought with him on his visits, Branch Manager Shannon Burdon engaged with his mum Kris learning more about Rob’s background and challenges.

From here, the seeds of employment opportunity were sown and Shannon approached our Managing Director Chris Moyes with a proposal to offer Rob a job. In consultation with his mum and supporting health care professionals, Flexihire came up with a role where Rob works 8 hours a week and is a fully integrated member of the branch, complete with uniform, employment contract and a job description.

To say Rob is delighted with his new role is an understatement. He lives for Flexihire and doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty – which is a good thing given the nature of working in the [equipment hire](https://www.flexihire.com.au/) industry!

Giving Rob this opportunity is not only a huge win for Flexihire as we have a passionate and dedicated employee. It also shines a light on the many benefits of employing people with disabilities and sets an example for other companies to follow.

Flexihire is proud to have Rob on board and the whole team look forward to supporting him and helping him learn and grow in this newly created role. Welcome Rob to the Flexihire Team.
